Domestic air passenger traffic in India experienced a notable increase of 5.1% year-on-year in May, reaching an estimated 138.9 million passengers, according to credit ratings agency ICRA.
This figure is significantly higher, by approximately 14%, than pre-COVID levels. ICRA attributes the stable outlook for the Indian aviation industry to the ongoing recovery in both domestic and international passenger traffic, a relatively stable cost environment, and the expectation of continued growth into FY2025.
<h3>Domestic air traffic surge</h3>
In May, airlines' capacity deployment rose by 6% year-on-year and was about 2% higher than in April 2024. For FY24, domestic air passenger traffic was around 154 million, marking a year-on-year growth of approximately 13% and surpassing the pre-COVID level of 142 million in FY2020. International passenger traffic for Indian carriers also saw a robust year-on-year growth of around 24%, reaching approximately 29.68 million passengers in the last fiscal year.
The industry has benefited from improved pricing power, reflected in higher yields compared to pre-COVID levels. Despite this, ICRA cautions that further expansion in yields from current levels may be limited.
Average aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices stood at Rs 103,499 per kiloliter in FY2024, which is 14% lower than the Rs 121,013 per kiloliter in FY2023, but significantly higher by 58% compared to the pre-COVID levels of Rs 65,368 per kiloliter in FY2020. In the first quarter of FY2025, average ATF prices were 5.4% higher year-on-year, although they declined by 6.5% sequentially in June 2024.
Fuel costs account for 30-40% of airlines' expenses, with around 45-60% of operating expenses, including aircraft lease payments and maintenance, denominated in dollars. The industry reported a net loss of approximately Rs 170-175 billion in FY2023 due to high ATF prices and rupee depreciation against the US dollar. ICRA forecasts a reduced net loss of around Rs 30-40 billion for FY2025, reflecting healthier passenger traffic growth and sustained pricing discipline.&nbsp;

Domestic air traffic touched a new single-day high of 4,71,751 passengers on Sunday, according to official data.
The traffic on Sunday was more than 14% higher than the average pre-Covid count of 3,98,579.
On April 21, the total number of domestic air passengers stood at 4,71,751 and the number of flights was 6,128, as per the data from the civil aviation ministry.
This is higher than the domestic air traffic of 4,28,389 passengers and 5,899 flights recorded on April 21, 2023.
In a post on X, the ministry said India's domestic aviation is "everyday at a new high".
"Domestic aviation in India is witnessing unprecedented growth, driven by factors such as concrete policies, economic development, and expansion of low-cost carriers. As more people gain access to air travel, the sector is expected to continue its upward trajectory," it said.
Last week, aviation regulator DGCA said passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-March 2024 were 391.46 lakhs as against 375.04 lakhs during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering an annual growth of 4.38 per cent and monthly growth of 3.68 per cent.

InterGlobe Enterprises and Archer Aviation are teaming up to introduce electric air taxi services in India, connecting Connaught Place in the national capital to Gurugram in Haryana&nbsp;

InterGlobe Enterprises, the parent company of India's top airline IndiGo, and US-based Archer Aviation will launch an all-electric air taxi service in India in 2026, that will carry passengers from Connaught Place in the national capital to Gurugram in Haryana in just 7 minutes.
Archer Aviation will supply 200 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft that can carry four passengers besides a pilot and operate just like helicopters but with lesser noise and better safety.
Besides Delhi, the joint venture between InterGlobe and Archer Aviation will launch similar services in Mumbai and Bengaluru to start with.
The cost of the seven-minute flight operated with the company's five-seater eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft from Connaught Place to Gurugram in Haryana could be around Rs 2,000 to 3,000, according to Archer Aviation executives.
Archer Aviation Founder and CEO Founder &amp; CEO Adam Goldstein on Friday said discussions are going on with the US regulator Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the certification process for its aircraft is at an advanced stage.
The certification is expected next year and once that is in place, the process will be initiated for the certification by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
In an interview with PTI in the national capital, Goldstein said the company expects to start flights in India in 2026 and aims to have 200 of its Midnight planes for the operations.
Initially, Archer Aviation will be focusing on Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. With its flight, the duration will be around 7 minutes from Connaught Place in Delhi to Gurugram and the cost could be Rs 2,000 to 3,000. In a car, for the 27-kilometre distance, it would take around 90 minutes and the cost would be about Rs 1,500, according to Goldstein.
The five-seater Midnight aircraft will be able to accommodate the pilot and four passengers. The plane, which will have six battery packs, will get fully charged in 30-40 minutes and one minute charge broadly translates to one minute of flight, its Chief Commercial Officer Nikhil Goel said.
Archer Aviation will be having a joint venture with InterGlobe Enterprises and the final contours are being worked out.
The US company is also in discussions with various municipalities with respect to infrastructure and other aspects of the flight operations.
Goel said it will use the full strength of InterGlobe, which is a conglomerate, and the joint venture might choose partners for the eVTOL operations in India.
Discussions are also going on with respect to the real estate space required for vertiports or the launchpads and other infrastructure for starting the flight operations.
Archer Aviation will be opening its manufacturing facility in the US this year and initially, it will have a capacity to produce up to 650 planes and the same will be enhanced to 2,000 planes.
To a query on whether the company will be looking at manufacturing the planes in India in the future, Goldstein replied in the affirmative.
Last year, Archer Aviation entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with InterGlobe Enterprises, an Indian travel conglomerate and the country's IndiGo is part of it.&nbsp;

December is poised to set a post-pandemic record for the number of passengers as air travel in India surges. The airfares have also gone up in December compared to the previous months due to the sudden demand surge.&nbsp;
<h3>Passenger demand surge</h3>
Mint quoted Software-as-a-service (SaaS) company RateGain and said that outbound flight bookings from India for early December have surpassed the number for the entire month of November. RateGain still expects 15-20% monthly increase in bookings for December.&nbsp;

The in-bound flights to India are also showing a slight uptick and is expected to rise 5-10% month-on-month rise compared with November. As per data release by government in December the daily average of air travellers have touched nearly 45,000, surpassing the previous 2023 high of 430,000 passengers in May.
<h3>Airfare surge</h3>
This skyrocketing demand coupled with limited aircraft and parts shortage has led to higher fares compared with October&rsquo;s Navratri and Dussehra season.
Aloke Bajpai, ixigo&rsquo;s CEO told Mint that there has been a 20-25% rise in fares for December over October. However, fares for the year-end peak season are lower than the previous year, partly due to recent reductions in aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices.
The ATF prices were cut 4.6% &nbsp;to ₹106,155.67 per kl on 1 December. Despite these fuel price cuts, the airfares remain over 80% higher than in 2019. Jet Fuel alone accounts for 40% of airlines' expenses.
Among nations in the Indo-Pacific region, India has witnessed the biggest surge in airfare, as per a survey conducted by the Airports Council International and Flare Aviation Consulting.
Nishant Pitti of EaseMyTrip told Mint that fares on key domestic routes for late December have risen up to 50%.
&ldquo;In fact, after covid, travel to and from India has continued to be substantially more expensive than it was before, on average by 30-40%. We have observed that airfares have seen a notable increase of up to 50% for the 24 December&ndash;1 January on major domestic routes such as Delhi-Mumbai, Mumbai-Bengaluru, and Mumbai-Chennai," Pitti told Mint.
Domestic hotspots Goa, Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Puducherry remain popular. Travel portals have also witnessed a slight uptick in international travel. As per data from ixigo, Dubai, Bangkok, New York, Colombo, Bali and Male are the currently the top international destinations booked for travel in December.
<h3>2024 Forecast</h3>
RateGain&rsquo;s forecasts for January 2024 indicate a sustained rise in outbound bookings and a notable surge in business travel arrivals. Specifically, outbound flights for January 2024 are tracking 12% higher than the same period last year.
Additionally, while inbound flight bookings for leisure in January mirror last year&rsquo;s figures, business travel arrivals show a substantial 33% year-on-year increase, according to RateGain.

Total traffic in 2022 (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) rose 64.4 per cent compared to 2021, International Air Transport Association (IATA) said.
It also said that globally, full year 2022 traffic was at 68.5 per cent of pre-pandemic (2019) levels while December 2022 total traffic rose 39.7 per cent compared to December 2021 and reached 76.9 per cent of the December 2019 level.
The recovery in air travel continued in December 2022 and for the full year. India's full year domestic traffic rose 48.8 per cent versus 2021, reaching 85.7 per cent of the 2019 level, it stated.
International traffic, globally, in 2022 climbed 152.7 per cent versus 2021 and reached 62.2 per cent of 2019 levels. December 2022 international traffic climbed 80.2 per cent over December 2021, reaching 75.1 per cent of the level in December 2019.
According to IATA, domestic traffic for 2022 rose 10.9 per cent compared to the preceding year. The year 2022 domestic traffic was at 79.6 per cent of the full year 2019 level. December 2022 domestic traffic was up 2.6 per cent over the year ago period and was at 79.9 per cent of December 2019 traffic.

It also said that any specific reference to fine/penal action need not be announced as part of the in-flight announcements.
The total number of active coronavirus cases in the country accounted was only 0.02 per cent of the total infections and the recovery rate increased to 98.79 per cent, according to the latest official data.

Similarly, flights with duration between 40-60 minutes have a lower limit of Rs 3,700 instead of Rs 3,300 now. The upper cap on these flights was increased by 12 percent to Rs 11,000 on Thursday.
The flights with duration between 60-90 minutes have a lower limit of Rs 4,500 -- an increase of 12.5 percent. The upper cap on these flights was increased by 12.82 percent to Rs 13,200 on Thursday.
Now, domestic flights of duration between 90-120, 120-150, 150-180 and 180-210 minutes have lower caps of Rs Rs 5,300, Rs 6,700, Rs 8,300 and Rs 9,800, respectively, as per the ministry's order.
Till date, domestic flights of duration between 90-120, 120-150, 150-180 and 180-210 minutes had the lower limits of Rs 4,700, Rs 6,100, Rs 7,400 and Rs 8,700, respectively.
The lower cap on flights between 120-150 minutes duration was increased by 9.83 percent to Rs 6,700, as per the new order.
On Thursday, the upper caps on domestic flights of duration between 90-120, 120-150, 150-180 and 180-210 minutes were increased by 12.3 percent, 12.42 percent, 12.74 percent and 12.39 percent, respectively, as per the order.
The caps mentioned by the government in its order does not include the passenger security fee, user development fee for the airports and the GST. These charges are added on top when the ticket is being booked by the passenger.

Vistara on Wednesday operated India&rsquo;s first flight with pilots and cabin crew fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The special flight departed Delhi International Airport on June 16 and arrived at Mumbai Airport. Vistara has said that it plans to operate more such flights in the coming days as their number of fully vaccinated staff increases.
The airline recently announced that it had got nearly 100% of its eligible employees vaccinated with at least their first doses. This included Vistara&rsquo;s airport and corporate staff, cabin crew and pilots. Vistara also said that they continue to ramp up efforts to ensure all eligible employees receive their second doses as well in time.
