Air India has cancelled at least 11 flights since Monday and is carrying out precautionary checks on those planes that had flown over locations that had ash plumes due to the volcanic activity in Ethiopia.
Ash clouds from the recent eruption of the Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia are impacting flight operations, and there are reports suggesting that clouds are drifting towards the western parts of India.
Air India said it has cancelled four flights on Tuesday -- AI 2822 (Chennai-Mumbai), AI 2466 (Hyderabad-Delhi), AI 2444 / 2445 (Mumbai-Hyderabad-Mumbai) and AI 2471 / 2472 (Mumbai-Kolkata-Mumbai).
On Monday, it had cancelled seven international flights, including AI 106 (Newark-Delhi), AI 102 (New York (JFK)-Delhi), AI 2204 (Dubai-Hyderabad) and AI 2290 (Doha-Mumbai).
Giving the flight details in a post on X on Tuesday, Air India said it is carrying out precautionary checks on those aircraft which had flown over certain geographical locations after the Hayli Gubbi volcanic eruption.
"Our ground teams across the network are keeping passengers updated on their flight status and are providing immediate assistance, including hotel accommodation. We are making every effort to arrange alternative travel at the earliest," the airline said.
There were no latest updates from IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet and Akasa Air on the situation.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the ash clouds are drifting towards China and will move away from India by 7.30 pm on Tuesday.
Forecast models indicated ash influence over Gujarat, Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana on Tuesday, the IMD said.
In a detailed advisory on Monday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) asked airlines to strictly avoid published volcanic ash affected areas and flight levels, adjust flight planning, routing, and fuel considerations based on the latest advisories.
Also, airlines have been asked to immediately report any suspected ash encounter, including engine performance anomalies or cabin smoke/odour.
DGCA noted that if volcanic ash affects airport operations, then the operator concerned must immediately inspect runways, taxiways, and aprons. Depending on the contamination, the operations may be restricted, and cleaning procedures have to be completed before resuming movements, it added.

Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for an NGO, said that a parallel inquiry should be done like a court of inquiry into the accident of such a major scale. He said that a pilot federation has stated that these airplanes cannot be trusted and there is a huge risk on people flying in their aircraft.
Justice Kant said these proceedings should not become a fight between one airline versus another airline, and asked Mehta to file the response to the plea filed by the father of the deceased father. The bench adjourned the matter for further hearing after two weeks.&nbsp;
On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft operating flight AI171 en route to London's Gatwick airport crashed into a medical hostel complex shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad, killing 265 people, including 241 passengers and crew on board.&nbsp;

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi issued notice to the Centre and the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on his plea.
"You should not carry burden on yourself. The pilot is not to be blamed for the plane crash. It was an accident. There is no insinuation against him even in the preliminary report," the bench said.
Senior advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, appearing for the pilot's father, Pushkaraj Sabharwal, said there was a news article in US publication Wall Street Journal with regard to the pilot, Captain Sumeet Sabharwal. "It was nasty reporting only to blame India," the bench responded.
It read out a paragraph from the preliminary report of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board (AAIB) issued on July 12 and said nowhere it is said that the pilot is to be blamed for the accident and it only refers to the conversation between the two pilots of the plane.
"The scope of the AAIB investigation is not to blame but to suggest preventive measures to avoid future tragedies. If necessary, we will clarify that the pilot cannot be blamed," the bench said. The court listed the matter for further hearing on November 10, along with other pending petitions on the incident.
The June 12 plane crash claimed 260 lives &mdash; 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. Last month, Pushkaraj Sabharwal and the Federation of Indian Pilots moved the Supreme Court for a court-monitored inquiry headed by a former apex court judge into the plane crash.
The nonagenarian has sought a "fair, transparent and technically robust" investigation into the tragic incident. "An incomplete and prejudiced inquiry, without identification of the exact cause of the accident, endangers the lives of future passengers and undermines aviation safety at large, causing a violation of Article 21 of the Constitution," his plea said.
The petition, filed through AP&amp;J Chambers on October 10, made Union Ministry of Civil Aviation, DGCA and AAIB respondents. The plea seeks directions for the constitution of an independent committee, also comprising aviation and technical experts, to probe the crash.
The ill-fated aircraft had taken off from Ahmedabad for London Gatwick but crashed within minutes, impacting the BJ Medical College hostel located less than a nautical mile from the end of the runway. The Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) failed to activate, and both the pilot-in-command Captain Sumeet Sabharwal and co-pilot Captain Clive Kunder lost their lives in the crash, the plea said.

&ldquo;It is very painful... I am broken,&rdquo; Vishwas Kumar Ramesh told reporters recently, during an interaction organised by Leicester community groups to highlight his plight.
Air India said it remains &ldquo;deeply conscious&rdquo; of its responsibility towards Vishwas Kumar Ramesh and has been supporting the family through the &ldquo;unimaginable period&rdquo;, with over 95 per cent of those impacted by the tragedy now having received interim payments pending the conclusion of the crash investigation.
Radd Seiger, a UK-based retired lawyer who volunteers as a crisis management adviser, has taken charge as Ramesh&rsquo;s spokesperson and appealed to Air India CEO Campbell Wilson to meet with the family to be able to fully assess and address the gravity of the situation.
&ldquo;This has had a devastating effect on the entire family, both in the UK and in India, and we are issuing a direct appeal to the Chief Executive Officer, Campbell Wilson, to come and see that for himself and then to work with us to help Vishwas Kumar,&rdquo; Seiger told PTI.
&ldquo;He needs a lot of help. His injuries are significant, both physical and psychological. The family also ran a fishing business in Diu which has collapsed after the crash in June, so they are suffering financially as well. Seiger, who will be travelling to Diu next week to gather further information, said the 21,500-pound flat interim compensation from the airline is not enough to meet the pressing daily needs of the family.
&ldquo;At the moment, the reality is Vishwas Kumar is sitting alone in his bedroom, clearly suffering, day in, day out, and it's urgent that they come and meet with us to really begin to help him,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;We must all understand that what he went through that day, on the 12th of June, no other human being on this planet has ever had that experience. "This was a modern airliner that crashed. Everybody perished apart from him. This has never happened before, so it's impossible for any of us to understand what he is going through psychologically. He is going to need very specialist support, certainly from a psychological point of view," he said.
The family spokesperson added that the UK&rsquo;s state-funded National Health Service (NHS) is unable to support the British citizen with the level of bespoke support required.
"Care for him &ndash; and indeed all families affected by the tragedy &ndash; remain our absolute priority," Air India said in a statement.
&ldquo;Senior leaders from across Tata Group continue to visit families to express their deepest condolences. An offer has been made to Mr Ramesh&rsquo;s representatives to arrange such a meeting, we will continue to reach out and we very much hope to receive a positive response.
&ldquo;We are keenly aware this continues to be an incredibly difficult time for all affected and continue to offer the support, compassion, and care we can in the circumstances,&rdquo; the statement added.
Vishwas Kumar Ramesh was seated in seat 11A when the London Gatwick airport-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed near the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad soon after take-off. It caused the death of all other passengers and crew on board, as well as 19 on-ground fatalities after hitting the hostel block of the city's B.J. Medical College.

"On flight AI180 from San Francisco to Mumbai via Kolkata, two passengers were unfortunately bothered by the presence of a few small cockroaches on board. Our cabin crew, therefore, relocated the two passengers to other seats in the same cabin, where they were comfortable thereafter," an airline spokesperson said in a statement on Monday.
During the flight's scheduled fuel stop in Kolkata, the airline's ground crew conducted a deep cleaning process to address the issue and the same aircraft subsequently departed in time for Mumbai.
"Despite our regular fumigation efforts, insects can sometimes enter an aircraft during ground operations. Air India will be undertaking a comprehensive investigation to determine the source and the cause of this incident and implement measures to prevent recurrence," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also apologised for any inconvenience caused to the passengers.
Details about the number of passengers onboard the flight was not available.

The low-cost carrier said it offered all possible options to passengers, including complimentary rescheduling on preferred dates.
"One of our flights from Ranchi was cancelled shortly after boarding due to a technical issue. Guests have been offered options, including re-accommodation on the next available flight with a hotel stay, complimentary rescheduling to a preferred date, or cancellation with a full refund. We regret the inconvenience while prioritising safety in every aspect of our operations," a spokesperson of the airline said.
Ranchi Airport Director RR Maurya had said that the AIX (Air India Express) 1200 from Ranchi to Delhi, which was scheduled to take off at 6 pm on Sunday, was cancelled due to a technical snag.
Maurya said some passengers were accommodated on other flights, while several others had their tickets cancelled. A few passengers were rescheduled for Monday, he had said.
A 39-year-old passenger, Faiz Anwar, had on Sunday told PTI, "We boarded the flight around 5.20 pm and waited till 7 pm when all of a sudden we were asked to deboard without providing any reason. I have to attend an important meeting in Delhi tomorrow, but they are not ready to reschedule my flight."
He claimed that there were many passengers, who had to catch connecting international flights from Delhi for the UK, the US and South Africa, but no one was there to pay heed to their requests.

The Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) on Thursday asked the government to reassess possible technical misinterpretation or mechanical faults in Air India's Boeing 787-8 plane that crashed last month and sought inclusion of subject matter experts in the probe.
Flagging concerns about Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) preliminary report into the crash that killed 260 people on June 12, the federation said the report failed to sufficiently consider or acknowledge two plausible and previously documented technical scenarios, either of which could have triggered an automated shutdown of both engines.
FIP has written a letter to the civil aviation ministry raising various concerns related to the crash probe and the preliminary report, according to a source.
While appreciating the timely release of the preliminary findings, the federation also said the initial report appears to infer or suggest the possibility of pilot error, without presenting any conclusive evidence or exploring well-documented technical failure modes previously observed in a similar aircraft.
In the letter, the association alleged that it is not the first time that systemic failures within Boeing aircraft have initially been attributed to pilot error or suicidal intent, only to be disproven by subsequent investigations.
To prematurely and indirectly suggest pilot error in preliminary report of Al-171, without thorough validation or elimination of these known technical pathways, risks not only misplaced blame but repeating past investigative failures, the source said, quoting the letter.
FIP has called for reassessment of the role of TCMA/EEC/FADEC misinterpretation and mechanical faults, based on available FDR/CVR data and prior Boeing bulletins.
TCMA is Thrust Control Malfunction Accommodation, EEC is Electronic Engine Controller, FADEC is Full Authority Digital Engine Control, FDR is Flight Data Recorder and CVR is Cockpit Voice Recorder.
The AAIB's preliminary report, released on Saturday, said the aircraft's fuel switches were cut off within a gap of one second immediately after takeoff and caused confusion in the cockpit before the aircraft crashed into a building. The aircraft was operating the flight AI 171 fro Ahmedabad to London Gatwick.
While the report does not provide any conclusions, there are speculations in certain quarters that a possible pilot error could have also led to the crash.&nbsp;

Aviation watchdog DGCA on Monday directed airlines to inspect the fuel switch locking system in their Boeing 787 and 737 planes, two days after AAIB's preliminary report said fuel switches were cut off before the Air India plane crash that killed 260 people last month.
There are more than 150 Boeing 737s and 787s being operated by Indian airlines. Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, SpiceJet and IndiGo are the domestic carriers operating these aircraft.
Of these, IndiGo has seven B 737 Max 8 and one B787-9. All these are leased planes --either on wet or damp lease-- and so are not registered in India.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), back in 2018, had flagged the potential disengagement of the fuel control switch locking feature on certain models of Boeing aircraft, including 787s and 737s.
It was mentioned in a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) but there was no airworthiness directive, indicating that the issue was not a safety concern.
On Monday, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said it has come to its notice that several operators- internationally as well as domestic - have initiated inspection on their aircraft fleet as per the FAA's SAIB.
"... all airline operators of the affected aircraft are hereby advised to complete the inspection... no later than 21st July 2025. Inspection plan and report after accomplishment of inspection shall be submitted to this office under intimation to concerned Regional Office," the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said in an order.
Fuel control switches regulate the flow of fuel into the aircraft engines. In its preliminary report on the Boeing 787-8 crash released on Saturday, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) said the fuel supply to both engines of the plane was cut off within a gap of one second, causing confusion in the cockpit soon after take off.
"In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cut off? The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report said.
AAIB, which mentioned about FAA's SAIB in the report, did not suggest any recommended action.
Air India Group has already started checks of the fuel switch locking system in their Boeing 787 and 737 aircraft.
Sources said the checks of the locking system in more than half of Air India's Boeing 787s have been completed while the checks are almost complete with respect to Boeing 737s.
Tata-owned Air India has a total of 33 wide-body Boeing 787s while Air India Express has around 75 narrow-body 737s.
The sources said the group initiated the voluntary exercise as a precautionary measure.
Akasa Air and SpiceJet operate Boeing 737s. IndiGo also operates Boeing 787 and 737s but they are leased from foreign airlines, which means they won't be subject to the DGCA directive.
In the wake of the AAIB report, globally, some airlines, including Etihad Airways, have initiated steps for inspection of the fuel switch locking system in their Boeing 787s.

Amid speculations in various quarters about the reasons for the fatal crash that killed 260 people on June 12, the Air India chief said the preliminary report identified no cause nor made any recommendations and urged everyone to avoid drawing premature conclusions as the investigation is far from over.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Saturday released its preliminary report on the crash of Air India's Boeing 787-8 plane that killed 260 people, including 241 people onboard. The aircraft, which was operating the flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed into a building soon after takeoff.
In a message to Air India staff, Wilson on Monday said the preliminary report found no mechanical or maintenance issues with the aircraft or engines, and that all mandatory maintenance tasks had been completed.
"There was no issue with the quality of fuel and no abnormality with the takeoff roll. The pilots had passed their mandatory pre-flight breathalyser and there were no observations pertaining to their medical status," he said.
Further, Wilson said out of an abundance of caution and under the oversight of regulator DGCA, every Boeing 787 aircraft operating in our fleet was checked within days of the accident and all were found fit for service.
"We continue to perform all necessary checks, as we will any new ones that authorities may suggest," he added.
The airline, he said, will continue to co-operate with the investigators to ensure they have everything they need to conduct a thorough and comprehensive enquiry.
"The release of the preliminary report marked the point at which we, along with the world, began receiving additional details about what took place. Unsurprisingly, it provided both greater clarity and opened additional questions," Wilson said.
Over the past 30 days, he said there has been an ongoing cycle of theories, allegations, rumours and sensational headlines, many of which have later been disproven.
"Until a final report or cause is tabled, there will no doubt be new rounds of speculation and more sensational headlines... Let us not be diverted from what are our top priorities: standing by the bereaved and those injured, working together as a team, and delivering a safe and reliable air travel experience to our customers around the world," Wilson said.
He also stressed that the airline must remain focused on its task and be true to the values of integrity, excellence, customer focus, innovation, and teamwork.
The AAIB report said the fuel supply to both engines of flight AI171 was cut off within a second of each other, causing confusion in the cockpit and the airplane plummeting back to the ground almost immediately after taking off.
The 15-page report also said that in the cockpit voice recording, one unidentified pilot asked the other why he had cut off the fuel, which the other denied.

Many panel members mentioned the Air India plane crash on June 12, and one of the members sought to know from the ministry officials about the time frame for completing the analysis of the aircraft's black boxes, the sources said.

"Following the unfortunate accident involving Air India Flight AI-171, the AAIB promptly initiated an investigation and constituted a multidisciplinary team on 13 June 2025, in line with prescribed norms.
"The team, constituted as per international protocol, is led by DG AAIB, and includes an aviation medicine specialist, an ATC officer, and representatives from National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) which is government investigative agency from the state of manufacture and design, (USA), as required for such investigations," the civil aviation ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The ministry also said on June 24 evening, the team led by AAIB Director General GVG Yugandhar with technical members from AAIB and NTSB began the data extraction process.
"The Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the front black box was safely retrieved, and on 25 June, 2025, the memory module was successfully accessed and its data downloaded at the AAIB Lab.
"The analysis of CVR (Cockpit Voice Recorder) and FDR (Flight Data Recorder) data is underway. These efforts aim to reconstruct the sequence of events leading to the accident and identify contributing factors to enhance aviation safety and prevent future occurrences," the statement added.

The airline's flights to key cities in the UAE -- including Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah -- as well as other cities in the Middle East, are scheduled from Wednesday.
Meanwhile, IndiGo said its flight services to Gulf countries have stabilised and are operating as scheduled.

As bodies of Air India plane crash victims were charred beyond recognition, characteristics, such as metal rods in persons who had undergone surgeries in the past, proved crucial in the identification process, a local MLA involved in tagging corpses after the deadly tragedy said on Monday.
BJP MLA Dr Hasmukh Patel was one of the first legislators to reach the post-mortem section of the Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, where bodies were brought in after the crash in which 270 people lost their lives on June 12.
Considering the magnitude of the accident, it was evident that the identification of victims was going to be difficult, Patel told PTI.
"The (BJP) MLAs got a message from the party to reach the crash site, but it was chaotic. I called the civil hospital and was told that bodies were being brought there," he said.
By the time Patel, a doctor who had had a private practice for years, reached the facility, seven to eight bodies had been brought to the post-mortem section, and they were completely charred, he said.
The legislator from Amraiwadi said some bodies were burnt to such an extent that parts of them were coming off.
"We started tagging the bodies with tapes with the sequence of their arrivals. The tags would be put with the cotton tape on the body parts wherever possible &mdash; head, chest, arm," he said.
Under normal circumstances, victims would have been identified with the help of physical traits such as hair and ornaments on their person.
However, with the temperature reaching over 1000 degrees Celsius in the aircraft at the time of the crash, even this is of little help, he said.
Patel said, "We soon observed that although some bodies were charred, we could make out that some of the victims had undergone knee replacement surgeries and some had (surgical) plates, rods inserted in their bodies for medical reasons. We noted down these characterises along with the tags." The BJP deputed Patel to assist relatives in identifying bodies and giving samples for DNA matching.
"Bodies with specific physical characteristics were isolated. When relatives started pouring in, they were asked to provide basic details about the victims. The characteristics noted down while tagging the bodies helped in matching the DNA of some victims, making the process easier," he said.
Last week, the hospital authorities said bodies were being handed over to the families after the DNA match.
Officials on Sunday said 251 victims of the horrific June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash have been identified through DNA tests so far, and 245 bodies have been handed over to families.
A London-bound Air India flight crashed into a hostel complex in the Meghaninagar area moments after taking off from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport on the afternoon of June 12, killing 270 persons, including 241 on board.
One passenger survived.
Patel, who has been a part of the BJP's doctor cell for nearly two decades, recalled a similar incident in 1988 when an Indian Airlines flight from Mumbai (then Bombay) to Ahmedabad crashed, killing 133 persons.
He was a second-year student at the B.J.M Medical College, which incidentally was the site of the June 12 crash.
Even at that time, Patel volunteered to tag the dead bodies with his classmates.
Patel, who went on to complete his MD in Pathology, described both the incidents as heart-rendering.
"I was unable to sleep for a week after the June 12 incident. I was active physically, but then I would have issues sleeping due to the horrific nature of the incident. As a doctor, I have been trained to handle such situations, but this was different, just like the previous air crash in 1988," he said.

A London-bound Air India flight, AI-171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one passenger onboard the plane died along with nearly 29 on the ground when the aircraft crashed on a medical college complex shortly after the take-off.
In a statement on Friday, Air India announced cancellation of several flights -- Dubai-Chennai (AI906), Delhi-Melbourne (AI308), Melbourne-Delhi (AI309) and Dubai-Hyderabad (AI2204).
On domestic routes, Pune-Delhi (AI874), Ahmedabad-Delhi (AI456), Hyderabad-Mumbai (AI-2872) and Chennai-Mumbai (AI571) flights were cancelled.
The Delhi-Pune flight was cancelled after the airline, on its arrival from Delhi, detected that it had a bird hit. Consequently, it was grounded for extensive inspection.
The airline also said it made all arrangements, including accommodation for the stranded passengers.
Refunds on cancellation or complimentary rescheduling were also offered to passengers, the airline said.
According to the tour operators body, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), bookings for Air India flights have declined by around 20 per cent on domestic as well as international routes while the average fares have dropped by 8-15 per cent in the aftermath of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crash last week.
Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism &amp; Hospitality (FAITH) General Secretary Rajiv Mehra also said that an up to 20 per cent decline in bookings has been observed for Air India flights while the fares have turned cheaper by about 10 per cent on certain sectors where there is high competition with other carriers.
An Air India spokesperson did not respond to a query seeking comments from the airline on decline in bookings.
"Following the unfortunate incident involving Air India, we have observed a temporary decline in bookings, particularly on international sectors," IATO president Ravi Gosain told PTI.
"While the exact percentage varies by route, our estimates indicate a dip of around 18-22 per cent on international bookings and a 10-12 per cent fall domestically in the immediate aftermath. However, this appears to be a short-term sentiment-driven reaction, as confidence typically stabilises over time," Gosain said.
Noting that there has been a moderate adjustment in fares across key Air India routes, he said, "On an average, ticket prices have reduced by 8-12 per cent on domestic sectors where the airline competes directly with low cost carriers like IndiGo and Akasa." On international routes, especially to Europe and Southeast Asia, fares have seen a drop of 10-15 per cent, depending on route occupancy and competition. These reductions are a mix of promotional strategies and yield correction due to lowered demand," Gosain said.
Campbell Wilson, CEO and Managing Director of the Tata-owned Air India, meanwhile in a message said that around 500 employees of Air India and 17 from other Tata companies are in Ahmedabad to help the families of passengers, crew and others who lost their lives.
He further said the airline will progressively restore the international flight schedule, which has been reduced by 15 per cent till July 15 on account of additional pre-flight checks of its wide-body fleet and other geopolitical factors.
Wilson also clarified that Air India had senior-level representation at the final rites, of the 12-crew members who lost their lives in the crash.
The clarification came amid allegations on social media platforms that there were no Tata Group board member present at the funeral of the crew members.
On the on-going investigation, Campbell said that "there are many theories but, as the accident is now under official investigation by the AAIB, it is not appropriate for us to comment or speculate." "We are providing all information requested by the AAIB and are cooperating completely," he said, adding, "The final report can take many months, though the AAIB may choose to issue interim updates or reports."

Services will be suspended on Delhi-Nairobi, Amritsar-London (Gatwick) and Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick) till July 15.
While the Delhi-Nairobi route has four flights per week, the Amritsar-London (Gatwick) and Goa (Mopa)-London (Gatwick) routes each have three flights a week, according to the airline.
Besides, flights will be reduced on 18 international routes connecting cities in North America, Europe, Australia and the Far East.
The routes in North America, which will see reduced frequencies, are Delhi-Toronto, Delhi-Vancouver, Delhi-San Francisco, Delhi-Chicago and Delhi-Washington.
"The reductions arise from the decision to voluntarily undertake enhanced pre-flight safety checks, as well as accommodate additional flight durations arising from airspace closures in the Middle East," the statement said.
Earlier in the day, Air India CEO and Managing Director Campbell Wilson in a message to flyers said that as a confidence-building measure, the airline has elected to continue enhanced pre-flight safety checks on its Boeing 787 fleet and, as an added measure, its Boeing 777 aircraft for the time being.
Given the time these additional checks will consume and the potential impact on schedules, Air India has decided to reduce its international wide-body flights by around 15 per cent starting June 20, through to at least mid-July, Wilson said.
The routes in Europe with reduced flight services include Delhi-London Heathrow, Bengaluru-London Heathrow, Amristsar-Birmingham and Delhi-Birmingham, Delhi-Paris, Delhi-Milan, Delhi-Copenhagen, Delhi-Vienna and Delhi-Amsterdam.
Similarly, services on Delhi-Melbourne, Delhi-Sydney, Delhi-Tokyo Haneda and Delhi-Seoul (Incheon) have also been reduced as part of the revised schedule.
On Thursday, Air India again apologised to the passengers affected by these curtailments.
"Regrettably, the time required to perform these enhanced safety checks, along with the application of extra caution, external factors like airspace closures in Iran and the Middle East as well as night-time restrictions at some international airports, along with normal airline technical issues, has led to a higher-than-usual number of cancellations on our long-haul network in the past few days," the Air India chief said in his message.
