Custodians of the Taj Mahal and the Agra Fort have reportedly been served notices by the Uttar Pradesh government for pending payment of property tax and water bills.
The Archaeological Survey of India said that it has been asked to pay over ₹1 crore by UP authorities, according to an NDTV report.
The news report quoted ASI officials as saying that this is the first time such notices have been served as property taxes are not applicable on monuments. Also, there are no water connections for commercial use, and the lawns are maintained for public service, the ASI said.
The Archaeological Survey reportedly said that it was a mistake that should be remedied soon.

After a 6-month closure, Agra's Taj&nbsp;Mahal and Agra Fort have finally reopened for visitors but with new restrictions in place.

After 6 months of being closed due to the Covid-19 outbreak, the iconic Taj Mahal and Agra Fort have reopened for visitors with new rules and regulations in place.
There will be a cap on the number of tourists allowed per day, which is 5000 at the Taj Mahal and 2500 visitors per day at Agra Fort. Maintaining social distancing will be mandatory, even while posing for a photograph. Stickers for social distancing and thermal scanners have been put in place.
Ticket counters will no longer be open and tickets will have to be purchased online.&nbsp; Wearing a mask inside the premises will be mandatory.

The mausoleum&nbsp;and the fort closed for visitors in March in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.&nbsp;
The opening comes with strict guidelines issued by the government including social distancing measures and regular sanitisation of hands.&nbsp;
Ticket counters will no longer be open and tickets must be purchased online. Wearing a mask inside the premises is mandatory.&nbsp;
There will also be a cap on the number of visitors allowed each day. This includes&nbsp;5,000 tourists everyday in the Taj&nbsp;Mahal&nbsp;and 2,500 at the Agra Fort.&nbsp;
