The owner of the illegal firecracker unit, who was arrested in October last year for running the factory, fled to neighbouring Odisha after Tuesday's explosion, as per a PTI report.

An explosion at an illegal firecracker unit located in Egra in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal killed five people and critically injured seven others on Tuesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said.
The impact of the explosion "was so massive" that the factory, which was being run from a residential building, collapsed, police said.
Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the incident.
Villagers told PTI that the entire house looked like a "war zone" with body parts and debris strewn all around, including in a nearby pond.
"The illegal firecracker unit was functioning at a house in a village near the West Bengal-Odisha border. Five people were killed and seven others were critically injured in the blast. An investigation is underway," Banerjee said.
"The firecrackers were being sent to Odisha and local labourers were working there," she said, adding that the state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is probing the incident.
The Trinamool Congress supremo said the next of kin of the deceased will get a compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh each and the injured will get Rs 1 lakh, while the state government will bear the expenses of their treatment.
The CM said action will be taken against the local police chief of Egra police station as "he had no information that an illegal firecracker unit was operating" in the area.
Speaking on the BJP demand for an NIA probe, Banerjee said she has no objection to the central agency taking over the investigation.
"We do not have any objection to the NIA probe. But I would like to point out that the probe by the CID has already started," she said.
Preliminary investigation found that all the five deceased and seven injured were working in the factory, a police officer said.
Banerjee said the owner of the illegal firecracker unit, who was arrested in October last year for running the factory, has fled to neighbouring Odisha after Tuesday's explosion.
"He was arrested in October last year but got bail from the court. He fled the state soon after the explosion. I will ask the police to share his details with their counterparts in Odisha so that he is arrested immediately," she said.
The TMC chief claimed that the panchayat where the incident took place is being run by an Independent politician backed by the BJP, and TMC workers were not allowed to enter the village.
Policemen were attacked by villagers when they visited the spot.
Alleging that BJP and CPI(M) had been regularly "instigating" people to beat up policemen, Banerjee said strong action will be taken against the culprits.
"Police are the custodian (of law). Strong action must be taken against those assaulting law enforcers. I believe people have the right to demonstrate, but they must not assault policemen," Banerjee added.
She asked Environment Minister Manas Ranjan Bhunia and another local MLA to visit the spot.
Alleging that West Bengal has become a "stockpile of explosives", Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Governor C V Ananda Bose to initiate an NIA probe into the Egra blast.
The LoP also demanded that central forces be immediately deployed in the area, while fearing that the state police might illegally shift the bodies.
"Huge explosion in Sahara village in Egra, Purba Medinipur, at the local TMC leader Krishnapada Bag's (alias Bhanu) house. I am receiving news from the ground that the number of casualties is enormous. Immediately, central forces should be deployed as dead bodies are being shifted illegally by Mamata Police," Adhikari alleged in a tweet.
"I urge @HMOIndia &amp; Hon'ble @BengalGovernor to initiate @NIA_India investigation as early as possible. Bengal has become the stockpile of explosives...," he said in another Twitter post.
Bhunia said his department and the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) will intensify the campaign, asking everyone to alert the administration about the existence of illegal firecracker units operating in their respective areas.
"We had earlier undertaken a campaign to build awareness among the public in this regard. We need the help of the public to fight the menace," he said.
On March 20, three people were killed in a blaze at a fireworks unit at Mahestala in South 24 Parganas district. In December, 2022, three people were killed in a blast in a firecracker factory at Bhupatinagar in Purba Medinipur district.
After the incident in South 24 Parganas district, Bhunia had said green fireworks clusters adhering to all environment guidelines will be set up far away from congested areas.

A courageous woman fought off a wild boar to save her 11-year-old daughter at a farmland in Chhattisgarh's Korba district, forest officials said on Monday.
While her daughter remained unhurt, the woman died of serious injuries suffered in the face-off with the animal, they said.
The incident took place on Sunday in Teliyamar village under Pasan police station limits when the woman, identified as Duvashiya Bai (45) and her daughter Rinki went to a nearby farm to fetch soil, said Pasan forest range officer Ramnivas Dahayat said.

In the struggle, the woman managed to kill the wild boar but she also suffered serious injuries leading to her death, he said.

Soon after being alerted, forest personnel reached the spot and the woman's body was sent for post-mortem, he said.

A dozen others were injured in the accident near Khamariya village under Bhatapara police station area, located around 70 km away from capital Raipur, on Balodabazar-Bhatapara road late Thursday night, they said.
The victims, natives of Khilora village in Simga area, were returning home after attending a family function in Arjuni area when the pick-vehicle collided head-on with the truck, Balodabazar-Bhatapara Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Jha told PTI.
"Eleven persons, including four children, died in the incident while 12 others sustained injuries, two of them critically," he said.
The two critically-injured persons were shifted to a hospital in capital Raipur while 10 others were admitted to Balodabazar district hospital, he said.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, he added.
Efforts are on to trace the truck driver who fled from the spot leaving behind his vehicle, he added.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has expressed grief over the incident and directed the district administration officials to provide all possible assistance to the kin of the deceased and best medical care to the injured.

The injured are undergoing treatment at LNJP Hospital. Legal action is being taken accordingly, the police said.

A police head constable was killed and three others, including two cops, were injured when a pilot vehicle in Bharatiya Janata Party's Chhattisgarh unit chief Arun Sao's convoy met with an accident in Surguja district of the state, an official said on January 20.
The incident took place late night on Thursday on the outskirts of Udaipur town when Sao was going to Ambikapur, the headquarter of Surguja district, from Bilaspur to attend the two day-meeting of the state BJP's executive committee starting from Friday, he said.
Sao is also a Lok Sabha member from Bilaspur.
"The pilot vehicle of Sao's convoy overturned and skidded off the road that left head constable Ravishankar Prasad (55), one of its four occupants, dead on the spot," the police official said.
Three others - two constables and the driver of the vehicle - sustained critical injuries in the incident, he said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also announced financial help of Rs 5 lakh each for the kin of the deceased while ordering an inquiry into the cause of the accident.
The death toll may increase as the condition of some of the injured was said to be critical, officials said.&nbsp;

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Saturday escaped unhurt after a truck hit his escort vehicle which then rammed into his car from behind on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway, the second incident involving his official car in three weeks.
The latest incident occurred near Bahadurgarh town, close to the same spot where his car broke down earlier on December 19. He was on his way to Gurugram from Ambala Cantt, his home constituency, on both the occasions.
Vij said the Saturday's incident took place when he had taken a halt on the KMP Expressway.
"Today's incident was close to the spot where the previous one took place. We had taken a brief halt on the KMP and I was sitting in my car when suddenly a truck hit my escort vehicle, which was about 10 feet behind my car.
"The escort vehicle then rammed into my car, which got damaged. All escaped unhurt," Vij told PTI over the phone.
He said he was on his way to Gurugram when the incident took place.
On December 19, Vij had a miraculous escape when the shock absorber of his official vehicle broke down on the KMP Expressway.
At that time too, he was on his way to Gurugram from Ambala Cantt.&nbsp;

Based on the post-mortem report, fresh charges could be added against the five accused arrested in connection with the case, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sagar Preet Hooda said at a press conference. The accused have been booked on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, causing death by negligence and criminal conspiracy.
Earlier, the National Commission for Women sought a post mortem of the accident victim to find out whether she was sexually assaulted. The NCW in a statement said the woman's mother has alleged that the men raped her daughter.
The girl worked part-time in weddings and other functions and was returning home on her scooter from one such function on Sunday when she met with the accident. The girl is survived by her mother, four sisters and two brothers aged nine and 13.
According to an eye witness, the accused dragged the girl&rsquo;s body which got entangled under their vehicle for 18 to 20 kilometres and lasted for about one and a half hours.

Of the nine persons travelling in the SUV, eight died on the spot along with the driver of the luxury bus, he said.

Nine persons were killed and nearly 15 others injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) rammed into a luxury bus in Navsari district of Gujarat in the wee hours of Saturday, police said.
The accident occurred on a national highway near Vesma village when the bus was going towards Valsad, while the SUV was coming from the opposite direction, Navsari Superintendent of Police (SP) Rushikesh Upadhyay said.
Of the nine persons travelling in the SUV, eight died on the spot along with the driver of the luxury bus, he said.
Those travelling in the SUV were residents of Ankleshwar (in Gujarat) and they were on their way back to their hometown from Valsad, Upadhyay said, adding that the passengers of the bus hailed from Valsad.
