The felling of trees in the colony has been opposed by environmentalists and residents.

In a big setback for environmentalists, the Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation to seek permission from tree-felling authority to cut 84 trees to build a metro shed in Aarey Forest.
The top Court was hearing the Aarey Forest case where it was considering primarily a Maharashtra govt plea seeking nod to cut trees for a shunting site.
The bench noted that the State Government considered several factors, such as the letter written by the Central Government and expert committee report while coming to the conclusion that the original decision to allow the metro car depot at Aarey should be restored.
No trees have been cut in the Aarey colony since 2019 after a PIL was filed in the apex court seeking a stay on the felling of trees.

Following the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government's move to overturn Maha Vikas Aghadi's Aarey metro car shed decision, activists and environment lovers voiced their discontentment.  Aarey, nestled in Mumbai's suburbs is a vast green cover that was deemed a protected forest by the MVA government. 
Thackeray cousins Amit and Aaditya, sons of Raj and Uddhav also took to social media to express their displeasure and worry over the Shinde government's move. 
Calling it a shocking move, Amit Thackeray wrote, 'The new decision by the new government is shocking for me and innumerable environment activists and lovers. The youth of the state had earlier struggled hard against the move. Some were even put in jail.' 
He urged the new government to reconsider its move stating that though development is necessary it should not be done at the cost of the environment. 
Amit's cousin Aaditya, who was at the forefront of Aarey protests in 2019 and also a former Environment Minister of Maharashtra wrote on Twitter, 'I humbly urge new government to reconsider its decision. Don’t cast the hate for us, on to our beloved Mumbai.'
The Shiv Sena scion further said that he will not be able to attend protests organised at Aarey on July 03 as he is due to attend the special Assembly session which saw BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar elected as the new Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
'Consider the proposal of having Metro-3 carshed at Kanjurmarg. I am requesting with folded hands, don’t insist on making the carshed at Aarey,' Aaditya added.
This comes after Aaditya's father Uddhav Thackeray said that he was upset with the Shinde government's move and he too asked them to not take out their anger for him on the people of Mumbai. 
Activists, environmental lovers and concerned citizens of Mumbai took to the streets in Aarey to protest against the new government's move, urging it to reconsider its decision. 
The Maha Vikas Aghadi government had shifted the car shed project to Kanjur Marg soon after assuming power however the decision has been reversed. 
Chief Minister Shinde has asked the State Urban Development Department to place before the Cabinet a proposal for a car shed at Aarey.

Within hours of coming to power on June 30, the Shinde government decided to re-allocate areas in the Aarey Colony for the proposed car shed.&nbsp;

In yet another incident at&nbsp;Mumbai's Aarey Colony, a middle-aged woman was seen fought off a leopard with her walking stick and managed to save her from the animal attack.
The whole incident was captured in a CCTV.
A purported video of the incident showed that a leopard pounced on the woman, identified as Nirmaladevi Singh, from behind when she was sitting outside her house.
She managed to fend the big cat off with her walking stick. Officials said that Nirmaladevi was safe and undergoing treatment.
This was the third incident of leopard attack in a week in the area which borders on the Sanjay Gandhi National Park.&nbsp;

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday announced the relocation of the&nbsp;metro car shed project in Aarey, which has been at the centre of a storm since October last year, and also said that cases against activists who protested against the felling of trees for the project had been withdrawn.
Addressing the state through a webcast, Thackeray said the project would now be shifted to a government land in Kanjurmarg. &ldquo;The Aarey car shed will moved to Kanjurmarg. We have allotted government land for the car shed for Rs 0. We won&rsquo;t spend a single rupee for acquiring this land,&rdquo; he said.

The Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to reserve 600-acre Aarey land near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in suburban Mumbai as a forest. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said the forest would be the first example of a "huge jungle" being conserved at the centre of a megapolis.&nbsp;The area to be excluded from the forest will be ascertained after seeking suggestions and objections from citizens, the govt said.

Mumbai, PTI: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to reserve 600-acre Aarey land near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in suburban Mumbai as a forest and conserve the same.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who said, the forest would be the first example of a "huge jungle" being conserved at the centre of a megapolis, an official statement said.
Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, Forest Minister Sanjay Rathod, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar and others were present for the meeting, the statement said.
The chief minister instructed during the meeting to safeguard the rights of adivasis (tribals) while the area is reserved as forest.
The area to be excluded from the forest will be ascertained after seeking suggestions and objections from citizens, the statement said.
Constructions of all types, roads, slums, adivasi pockets and government facilities will be excluded from the first phase of the initiative, the statement said.
The slums within the area will be rehabilitated immediately, the statement said.
In a series of tweets after the meeting, Aaditya Thackeray said, Approx 600 acres of open land being declared as forest while all rights of Adivasi communities will stand protected.
"Rehabilitation of slums within the area would be expedited. This would be phase 1 for which the Forest Dept will move a proposal.
Phase 2 survey for additional open/forest land in Aarey, post Phase 1 will begin soon.
"This would help the State protect the flora &amp; fauna existent in SGNP and Aarey, Aaditya Thackeray added.
The forested Aarey Colony in suburban Goregaon is a prominent green lung of Mumbai.
