Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday targeted the Devendra Fadnavis-led government for clearing projects that require felling of "lakhs of trees", including for the proposed Gargai dam to be built for supplying water to Mumbai.
Addressing a press conference, he hit out at the ruling BJP and said the party wants to turn Maharashtra into a desert.
"Never ever has the city (Mumbai) witnessed a water crisis in March and April which is being experienced this year. Temperatures are rising across the state, crossing over 40 degrees Celsius in March and April," Thackeray said, and attributed it to climate change.
"The State Wildlife Board has given approval to projects which will lead to felling of lakhs of trees. Permission has been given to cut five lakh trees in Thane and Palghar district for constructing Gargai dam to address water woes of Mumbai...The BJP wants to make Maharashtra a desert," the former state environment minister said.
If the need arises, the Sena (UBT) will approach the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Bhupender Yadav) as well as the country's President to oppose the project, he added.
The Gargai dam project had been scrapped when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was in power (from 2019 to 2022) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had decided to build a desalination plant which could have been completed much before the dam, required minimal space and could would have been very cost-effective, the Sena (UBT) leader said.
However, the desalination project was scrapped by the previous Eknath Shinde-led government. The plant would have generated 450 MLD water, which could have been increased to 600 MLD.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday gave a nod for the grant of wildlife and environmental clearances for the Gargai dam project in neighbouring Palghar district that will supply water to Mumbai.
The decision was taken at the 24th meeting of the Maharashtra State Wildlife Board, chaired by Fadnavis and attended by Forest Minister Ganesh Naik and senior officials.
The Gargai project is important for Mumbai's water requirements in view of growing population. With the approval for the 844.8 hectares land diversion proposal, additional drinking water will be available for Mumbaikars, Fadnavis said.
At present, seven lakes/reservoirs provide water to the country's financial capital.
Thackeray further said, "Instead of reducing the monsoon dependency of Mumbai city, the BMC is cutting trees and making the city more dependent on rains." Apart from this, 1.5 lakh trees will be cut for a mining project in Gadchiroli, he alleged.
"Trees will also be cut for the Marki Mangli (mining project)," Thackeray said, adding that the project had not been approved by the MVA government during his tenure as environment minister.
The Worli MLA also claimed that 60,000 trees will be cut for the Coastal Road's north-bound extension.
The wildlife board should have looked into it more responsibly, he said.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Suraj Chavan, aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray, in the Enforcement Directorate&rsquo;s (ED) probe into the alleged ₹6.7 crore Khichdi scam linked to COVID-19 relief efforts.
&nbsp; The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to Suraj Chavan, accused in the Khichdi scam involving financial irregularities in food distribution for migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
<ul>
<li>Justice Milind N Jadhav approved Chavan&rsquo;s bail on a ₹1 lakh provisional cash bond, with an option to provide sureties within four weeks.</li>
<li>Chavan is restricted from leaving Maharashtra, influencing witnesses, or tampering with evidence during his bail period.</li>
<li>ED accused Chavan of financial fraud in a contract linked to the BMC's food distribution scheme, alleging that he failed to explain transactions and did not cooperate with the probe.</li>
</ul>
The special PMLA court had denied Chavan&rsquo;s bail plea in September 2024, but the High Court overruled the decision. Chavan argued that ED selectively targeted him, while the owner of Force One Multi Services, which received the contract, was not arrested.
The HC directed Chavan to cooperate with the ED, appear before officials on specified dates, and avoid unnecessary trial delays.

Bharat Jodo Yatra: Sharad Pawar to skip, Aaditya Thackeray to join

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said 81-year-old Pawar had earlier agreed to participate in the foot march.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar will not join the Congress's Bharat Jodo Yatra due to health issues, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said on Thursday.
Addressing media persons here, Ramesh said Pawar (81) had earlier agreed to participate in the foot march.
''He was recently hospitalised and considering doctor's advice for rest, he will not join (the yatra),'' said Ramesh, the general secretary (communications) of the All India Congress Committee.
Pawar's daughter and NCP Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule, state party president Jayant Patil and NCP leader Jitendra Awhad reached Maharashtra's Nanded district on Thursday to join Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the foot march from Deglur Naka and to attend the latter's public rally in the evening.
AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge will also attend the rally.
Ramesh said Rahul Gandhi had spoken to Pawar when he was in hospital.
''Even though Pawar had agreed to join the yatra, he is unable to come due to doctor's advice for rest," the Congress leader said.

Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray on Friday took a dig at the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government over Vedanta-Foxconn choosing Gujarat over Maharashtra to set up its semiconductor plant, saying that "one engine of the double-engine government has failed".
Addressing party workers in Ratnagiri as part of the 'Shiv Samvad Yatra', the home district of rebel Sena MLA and state Industries Minister Uday Samant, Thackeray said the CM as well as the minister were clueless about the details of the project.
"How did the project go out of Maharashtra when we had done so much follow-up with Vedanta? The chief minister and the industries minister were clueless about this," Thackeray said in the rally.
In any other state, the chief minister would have asked for the industries minister's resignation, he said.
He said the state government was also unaware that a bulk drug park also slipped out of the hands of the state and is coming up in Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.
"How did one engine of the double-engine government fail?" he asked.
Double engine government is the term the BJP uses for its government at the Centre and another in the state which it claims can help in seamless development.
He said the state government was also unaware of another project by Airbus, which could come up in Nagpur. It was only after he raised the issue that the state government woke up and said they will ensure that it comes up in the state.
Thackeray also trained his guns at the rebel MLAs led by Shinde and said they "back-stabbed" his father and the then chief minister Uddhav Thackeray when he was ailing.

As per the MoU, the joint venture of the Indian conglomerate Vedanta and Taiwanese electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn will set up a semiconductor and display manufacturing unit in the state.
Vedanta-Foxconn would invest Rs 1,54,000 crore to set up the facility, which is expected to create one lakh job opportunities.

Following the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government's move to overturn Maha Vikas Aghadi's Aarey metro car shed decision, activists and environment lovers voiced their discontentment.  Aarey, nestled in Mumbai's suburbs is a vast green cover that was deemed a protected forest by the MVA government. 
Thackeray cousins Amit and Aaditya, sons of Raj and Uddhav also took to social media to express their displeasure and worry over the Shinde government's move. 
Calling it a shocking move, Amit Thackeray wrote, 'The new decision by the new government is shocking for me and innumerable environment activists and lovers. The youth of the state had earlier struggled hard against the move. Some were even put in jail.' 
He urged the new government to reconsider its move stating that though development is necessary it should not be done at the cost of the environment. 
Amit's cousin Aaditya, who was at the forefront of Aarey protests in 2019 and also a former Environment Minister of Maharashtra wrote on Twitter, 'I humbly urge new government to reconsider its decision. Don’t cast the hate for us, on to our beloved Mumbai.'
The Shiv Sena scion further said that he will not be able to attend protests organised at Aarey on July 03 as he is due to attend the special Assembly session which saw BJP MLA Rahul Narvekar elected as the new Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.
'Consider the proposal of having Metro-3 carshed at Kanjurmarg. I am requesting with folded hands, don’t insist on making the carshed at Aarey,' Aaditya added.
This comes after Aaditya's father Uddhav Thackeray said that he was upset with the Shinde government's move and he too asked them to not take out their anger for him on the people of Mumbai.

The rebel group said it enjoys a two-thirds majority in the legislature party and will prove its strength in the House. The dissidents have named their group as "Shiv Sena (Balasaheb)".
Amid these developments, Aaditya Thackeray has started holding meetings with the party workers and office-bearers from Saturday, which is being seen as a move to prevent any erosion of the cadre loyal to the Thackerays.
In his address, Aaditya said, "The road from the airport to the Vidhan Bhavan passes via Worli. It's good that the rebels left (Shiv Sena). There is no room for traitors in the party." The Sena has been witnessing the rebellion within the party after Eknath Shinde broke away and formed a rebel group with the support of several legislators. Shinde is currently camping with at least 38 rebel MLAs of the Sena and 10 independents in Guwahati. He has claimed that the faction led by him is the "real Shiv Sena".

Maharashtra&nbsp;minister Aaditya Thackeray said he has invited Elon Musk's Tesla to the state. The Shiv Sena leader took to Twitter to share that he along with industries minister Subhash Desai held a video call with Tesla executives to invite them. Stressing he believes electric mobility, supported by renewable energy is the way ahead, Thackeray further said that Maharashtra government is &lsquo;firmly committed to policy building and changes for sustainable development.&rsquo; Earlier this month, Elon Musk had indicated that the company could make a foray into India in 2021.

Pawar served I-T notice, says Centre 'loves us'

PTI, Mumbai:&nbsp;NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday said the Income Tax department has served him a notice in connection with his poll affidavits submitted to the Election Commission.
Talking to reporters here, Pawar said the Income Tax department has sought his "clarification and explanation" on some poll affidavits furnished by him.
"I got the notice yesterday...We are happy that they (the Centre) love us from among all the members...The notice was served by Income Tax after the Election Commission asked (it) to...We will reply to the notice," he said.
He was responding to a query on reports that his daughter and Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray had received similar notices from the Income Tax department.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said the forest would be the first example of a "huge jungle" being conserved at the centre of a megapolis.&nbsp;The area to be excluded from the forest will be ascertained after seeking suggestions and objections from citizens, the govt said.

Mumbai, PTI: The Maharashtra government on Wednesday decided to reserve 600-acre Aarey land near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) in suburban Mumbai as a forest and conserve the same.
The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, who said, the forest would be the first example of a "huge jungle" being conserved at the centre of a megapolis, an official statement said.
Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, Forest Minister Sanjay Rathod, Urban Development Minister Eknath Shinde, Chief Secretary Sanjay Kumar and others were present for the meeting, the statement said.
The chief minister instructed during the meeting to safeguard the rights of adivasis (tribals) while the area is reserved as forest.
The area to be excluded from the forest will be ascertained after seeking suggestions and objections from citizens, the statement said.
Constructions of all types, roads, slums, adivasi pockets and government facilities will be excluded from the first phase of the initiative, the statement said.
The slums within the area will be rehabilitated immediately, the statement said.
In a series of tweets after the meeting, Aaditya Thackeray said, Approx 600 acres of open land being declared as forest while all rights of Adivasi communities will stand protected.
"Rehabilitation of slums within the area would be expedited. This would be phase 1 for which the Forest Dept will move a proposal.
Phase 2 survey for additional open/forest land in Aarey, post Phase 1 will begin soon.
"This would help the State protect the flora &amp; fauna existent in SGNP and Aarey, Aaditya Thackeray added.
The forested Aarey Colony in suburban Goregaon is a prominent green lung of Mumbai.
