Director Jude Anthany Joseph expressed his disappointment on social media after his Malayalam- blockbuster &lsquo;2018&rsquo; failed to make the Oscars shortlist in the Best International Feature category.
In an Instagram post, Joseph shared a screenshot of the 15 shortlisted films and apologized to his well-wishers and fans of the movie.
In his note, the filmmaker wrote, &lsquo;Greetings, everyone. The Oscar shortlist has been unveiled, and regrettably, our film 2018- Everyone Is A Hero did not secure a spot among the final 15 films out of the 88 international language films from across the globe. I sincerely apologize to all my well-wishers and supporters for disappointing you all. Nevertheless, the opportunity to represent India in this competition has been a dream-like journey that I will cherish for a lifetime.&rsquo;
He continued, &lsquo;Being the highest-grossing film and the official Indian entry to the Oscars is a rare achievement in any filmmaker&rsquo;s career. I am grateful to God for choosing me for this extraordinary journey. My heartfelt thanks go to the producers, technicians, artists, and the audience for their tremendous support for our film. A special expression of gratitude to the Film Federation Of India, particularly Sir Ravi Kottarakkara, for their boundless support, love, and for selecting our film as India&rsquo;s official entry. &lsquo;2018&rsquo; is a disaster drama based on the Kerala floods. The film features well-known figures from the Malayalam-language film industry, such as Tovino Thomas, Kunchako Boban, Lal, and others.
Despite its commercial success, grossing over Rs 200 crore worldwide, some questioned why &lsquo;2018,&rsquo; a mainstream blockbuster, was chosen to compete in the highly coveted category, given that most films advancing to the next stage had premiered at prestigious European festivals.
The shortlist for the Best International Feature category includes frontrunners such as Japan&rsquo;s Perfect Days, Britain&rsquo;s The Zone of Interest, Finland&rsquo;s Fallen Leaves, Spain&rsquo;s Society of the Snow, and in a bit of a surprise, the subcontinent&rsquo;s The Monk and the Gun, from Bhutan.
Only three Indian films in history have secured nominations in the category formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film &ndash; Mother India, Salaam Bombay! and Lagaan. Last year, Pan Nalin&rsquo;s Last Film Show made it to the shortlist.

Malayalam hit film &lsquo;2018: Everyone Is a Hero&rsquo;, which was India&rsquo;s official entry to the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category, is out of the race for the 96th Academy Awards. The Jude Anthany Joseph directorial was based on the unprecedented rains and flood that hit Kerala in 2018.
The Academy of Motion Picture Art and Sciences announced its shortlist of films for Oscars 2024 on December 22. The list featured contenders in 10 categories including best original song, documentary feature, international feature, original score, visual effects, and sound.
Mstyslav Chernov's &lsquo;20 Days in Mariupol&rsquo; made the shortlist for both documentary and international feature categories, representing Ukraine in the latter.
Greta Gerwig's &lsquo;Barbie,&rsquo; Christopher Nolan's &lsquo;Oppenheimer,&rsquo; and Martin Scorsese's &lsquo;Killers of the Flower Moon&rsquo; were prominently featured in several categories like score and sound, along with Jonathan Glazer's &lsquo;The Zone of Interest.&rsquo;
Yorgos Lanthimos' &lsquo;Poor Things&rsquo; advanced in makeup, visual effects, and score, while &lsquo;Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse&rsquo; earned recognition in visual effects, song, and score.
Among the 15 international features moving forward are &lsquo;The Zone of Interest&rsquo; (United Kingdom), Trần Anh H&ugrave;ng&rsquo;s &lsquo;The Taste of Things&rsquo; (France), Lila Avil&eacute;s&rsquo; &lsquo;T&oacute;tem&rsquo; (Mexico), and Aki Kaurism&auml;ki&rsquo;s &lsquo;Fallen Leaves&rsquo; (Finland). However, Justine Triet's acclaimed &lsquo;Anatomy of a Fall&rsquo; wasn't chosen to represent France and was consequently ineligible in the category.
For the most part, shortlists are determined by members in their respective categories, although the specifics of the process vary from branch to branch. Some branches have committees, while others have minimum viewing requirements.
Final nominations in all categories will be announced on Jan. 23. The 96th Oscars, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, will be held on March 10, broadcasting live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The show will begin one hour earlier than usual, at 7 p.m. ET.

Far-right Norwegian lawmaker Christian Tybring-Gjedde on Wednesday nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in mediating the deal between Israel and the UAE which is seen as a historic step towards peace in the Middle East.
Israel and the UAE announced on August 13 that they were establishing full diplomatic relations. The first commercial direct flight between Israel and the UAE landed in Abu Dhabi on August 31 after both countries announced normalisation of relations. The deal would be signed on September 15 at the White House.
The UAE is only the third Arab country to establish diplomatic ties with the Jewish state. Israel's neighbours, Egypt and Jordan, being the other two Arab states to recognise Israel.
"President Trump was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his work in brokering an Israel-United Arab Emirates peace deal. It was a historic deal and the first such deal in over two decades. This is a hard-earned and well-deserved honour for this President," White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said on Wednesday.
President Trump has made peace a cornerstone of his recent foreign policy efforts, she said.

The 2018 prize was won by Denis Mukwege from Congo and Nadia Murad from Iraq for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict.
In his nomination letter on Wednesday, Tybring-Gjedde, a member of the Norwegian Parliament for the far-right Progress Party, also cited Trump's &ldquo;key role in facilitating contact between conflicting parties and &hellip; creating new dynamics in other protracted conflicts, such as the Kashmir border dispute between India and Pakistan, and the conflict between North and South Korea, as well as dealing with the nuclear capabilities of North Korea,&rdquo; the Fox News reported.
Trump has repeatedly in the past offered to mediate between India and Pakistan on the Kashmir issue. However, India has maintained that the Kashmir issue is a bilateral one and no third party has any role.
McEnany said that the president's foreign policy will always be one of peace through strength, and that is what the American people are seeing abroad.
"Career politicians merely talk about the kind of results this president has achieved on the world stage," she said.
"These wins are possible because of the President's leadership and outsider perspective. President Trump addresses old challenges with new solutions and delivers results for the American people," she said.
Highlighting Trump's initiatives, McEnany said that the US has announced a drawdown of troops in Iraq from 5,200 to 3,000.
"We've secured better trade deals for the American worker. President Trump negotiated the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), the U.S.-South Korea deal; ended the Trans-Pacific Partnership; brought back manufacturing jobs," she said. "President Trump has stood up to China: the phase one China deal; also tariffs to hold China accountable; and actions to block Huawei," she said.
President Trump has also defeated terrorists. The ISIS caliphate is destroyed. Al-Baghdadi is no longer on the battlefield, along with Iranian General Soleimani, she said.
He has also brokered economic normalisation between Serbia and Kosovo, a major breakthrough in this decades-old conflict, McEnany added.&nbsp;
