Bihar Polls 2020: All You Need to Know

As temperatures dip in some parts of the country, the political heat is rising in Bihar as polling draws near and political parties give their campaigns one final push. &nbsp;
The election for the 243-seat Bihar assembly is being held in 3 phases &ndash; 71 constituencies will vote in the first phase on October 28, 94 seats will go to polls in the second phase on November 3 and third phase on November 7 will cover 78 assembly seats. The ballots will be counted on November 10. &nbsp;
Around 7.29 crore people including nearly 78 lakh first-time voters will decide the fate of political stalwarts like Nitish Kumar and as well as that of rising sons like Tejashwi Yadav and Chirag Paswan. &nbsp;
Alliances have changed since the last Bihar assembly elections in 2015 which saw the RJD, JD(U) and Congress combine come to power. However, Nitish Kumar walked out of this grand alliance in 2017 to return to the BJP-led NDA fold. He continued as the Chief Minister but BJP&rsquo;s Sushil Kumar Modi replaced RJD&rsquo;s Tejashwi Yadav as the Deputy Chief Minister. &nbsp;
2020 might be the younger Yadav scion&rsquo;s year of vengeance as he takes the field as the chief ministerial candidate of the Congress-RJD Mahagathbandhan. The RJD has bagged the lion&rsquo;s share and will be contesting 144 seats, Congress 70 seats and the CPI-ML, CPI and CPI(M) will be contesting a total of 29 seats. The grand alliance is however a few allies short with Vikasheel Insaan Party and former CM Jiten Manjhi&rsquo;s Hindustani Awam Morcha quitting the alliance and joining NDA. &nbsp;
The ruling coalition may have gained 2 allies but it lost 1 very important ally with Lok Janshakti Party led by late Ram Vilas Paswan&rsquo;s son Chirag Paswan deciding to party ways with NDA in Bihar over differences with Nitish Kumar. While the LJP will fight the polls alone, it will field candidates only against JD(U) and not the BJP.&nbsp;
The saffron party is contesting 110 seats, the JD(U) 115 seats and smaller allies Vikasheel Insaan Party and CM Jiten Ram Manjhi&rsquo;s HAM will be fighting from 11 and 7 seats respectively.&nbsp;
There are other minor political parties and alliances in the fray as well. Former NDA ally Upendra Khushwaha&rsquo;s Rashtriya Lok Samta Party has joined hands with Asaduddin Owaisi&rsquo;s AIMIM. Chandrashekhar Azad&rsquo;s Azad Samaj Party has formed an alliance with MP Pappu Yadav&rsquo;s Jan Adhikar Party. &nbsp;
Whether these smaller parties dampen the Diwali festivities of the bigger ones by dividing their votes or Nitish Kumar beats anti-incumbency to retain his chair or an ailing Lalu Yadav sees his son lead his party to victory will be clear when the EVMs are unlocked on November 10. &nbsp;

Pak’s anti-corruption body approves fresh case against Nawaz Sharif

Pakistan&rsquo;s anti-corruption body has approved a new case against deposed premier Nawaz Sharif, days after Prime Minister Imran Khan urged the authorities to dispose of major graft cases quickly.
a fresh case was approved against Sharif along with former foreign secretary Aizaz Chaudhry, former Intelligence Bureau chief Aftab Sultan Sultan and Sharif&rsquo;s ex-personal secretary Fawad Hasan Fawad for &ldquo;illegally&rdquo; purchasing 73 high-security vehicles for the security of foreign dignitaries.
A total of 11 cases were approved at NAB&rsquo;s Executive Board Meeting on Thursday.
Sharif, the 70-year-old supremo of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the Supreme Court on corruption charges, is currently in London for medical treatment.

The Great Barrier Reef in Australia has lost half of its corals in the last 30 years, a new study by researchers from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies in Queensland has found.
The coral communities were analyzed between 1995 and 2017 and they found depletion in almost all coral populations. Climate change is being held responsible for the disturbance.
They concluded that the number of large, medium and small corals on the reef has declined by over 50% since the 1990s. Due to fewer babies and fewer large breeding adults, the ability of the reef to recover has been compromised.
The mass bleaching of 2016 and 2017 led to steeper deterioration&nbsp;in coral colonies in Nothern and Central Great Barrier Reef. They urged for a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Transgender Rights In India & The World

On 26th September, 2020, in the address made to the United Nations General Assembly, Indian PM Narendra Modi affirmed India&rsquo;s comittment to Transgender rights.
 He stated that &ldquo;rights of Transgenders are also being secured through necessary Legal reforms&rdquo; in India. In doing so, he became one of the few leaders to acknowledge Transgender rights on international forums.
 According to the Human Rights Watch, transgender is the identity of people whose gender assigned at birth does not conform to their lived gender&rdquo;&nbsp;
 Even today transgenders face discrimination across the globe. For instance, US earlier allowed Transgender people in the Army before President Trump reversed the decision in 2017. He claimed that they add &ldquo;tremendous medical costs and disruption&rdquo;
 Russia criminalized educating &ldquo;minors&rdquo; about Transgender in 2013, and banned Transgender people from driving in 2015.
 As of 2019, 16 countries including Japan and Finland require sterilisation for transgender people before granting them official recognition
 Even WHO categorized Transgender health issues under &ldquo;mental and behavioural disorders&rdquo; until 2019.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry&nbsp;this year has been awarded&nbsp;to French scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier and American Jennifer A. Doudna&nbsp;for&nbsp;developing a method of genome editing&nbsp;known as the CRISPR-Cas9 DNA,&nbsp;likened to 'molecular scissors' that offer the promise of one day curing genetic diseases.
CRISPR&nbsp;is gene technology's sharpest stool, using these, researchers can change the DNA of animals, plants and microorganisms with extremely high precision. Te Nobel jury said,&nbsp;the technology has had a revolutionary impact on the life sciences, is contributing to new cancer therapies and may make the dream of curing inherited diseases come true.
The strangest thing about the win however, is that back in 2017, Charpentier and Doudna lost the legal battle for the patent of it - which went to a US company.

Charges were framed against 48 people, but 17 have died during the course of trial.&nbsp;The trial under the serious criminal conspiracy charges commenced against the&nbsp;accused&nbsp;after having been dropped by the trial court in 2001. The verdict was upheld by the Allahabad High Court in 2010, but the apex court ordered restoration of the conspiracy charge against them on April 19, 2017.&nbsp;The top court ordered daily hearing in the high-profile case and directed the special judge to conclude it in two years.&nbsp;

The Delhi High Court Thursday questioned Arnab Goswami for running a parallel investigation and trial in the Congress leader Shashi Tharoor&rsquo;s wife Sunanda Pushkar&rsquo;s death case and directed the journalist to be bound by his undertaking on showing restraint and bringing down the rhetoric while covering the matter.&nbsp;Justice Mukta Gupta said the court was not saying that anyone will gag the media but at the same time, sanctity of investigation must be maintained.&nbsp;The judge said once the police investigation is going on in the criminal case, there cannot be a parallel investigation by the media.&nbsp;The high court referred to&nbsp;a&nbsp;2017 order in which it was stated that &ldquo;Press cannot &lsquo;convict anyone&rsquo; or insinuate&nbsp;a person&nbsp;is guilty or make any other unsubstantiated claims.&nbsp;&nbsp;
