Today marks the final opportunity for individuals and entities to deposit or exchange the now-defunct ₹2,000 banknotes. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had initially set the deadline for this process on September 30 but later extended it to October 7, 2023. As of tomorrow, October 8, exchanging or depositing these notes at bank branches will cease.
However, ₹2,000 notes will still retain their legal tender status post-October 7. Individuals and entities can exchange these notes, albeit with certain conditions. According to RBI, the exchange can be done at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices across the country, allowing transactions up to ₹20,000 at a time.
Additionally, these notes can be tendered at the RBI Issue Offices for crediting the equivalent amount to bank accounts in India. All transactions, however, are subject to compliance with relevant RBI and government regulations, submission of valid identity documents, and due diligence as determined by RBI.
Exceptions have been made for specific entities like courts, law enforcement agencies, government departments, and public authorities engaged in investigative proceedings or enforcement activities. These organizations can deposit or exchange ₹2,000 banknotes at any of the 19 RBI Issue Offices without any imposed limits.
RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said on October 6 that ₹3.43 lakh crore worth of ₹2,000 denomination notes have been reintegrated into the system. Starting October 8, the public can return these withdrawn notes exclusively at the designated 19 RBI offices.
As the deadline concludes, individuals and entities are urged to comply with the regulations set forth by the RBI to avoid any inconveniences regarding the exchange or deposit of ₹2,000 banknotes. Also Watch:&nbsp;

<h3>RBI governor on 2000 notes exchange or deposit after October 7</h3>
RBI governor has clarified that even after the deadline, ₹2000 notes can be exchanged or deposited in the Reserve Bank issue offices. There are 19 such RBI issue offices in various state capitals. Not just that, if you don't live in one of these 19 cities you can also use the postal department to send the notes to the RBI.
During the post credit policy press conference, the governor also pointed out that so far about 3.43 lakh crore worth of ₹2000 notes have been returned and about 12,000 crore is remaining. Of what has been returned, about 87% has come back as bank deposits.
The RBI had extended the special drive to withdraw Rs 2,000 bank notes from the system by an extra week from September 30th till October 7th. RBI had announced withdrawal of ₹2000 rupee notes on the 19th of May.&nbsp;

For the fourth time in a row, the RBI Monetary Policy Committee has kept the repo rate unchanged at 6.5%. During the credit policy announcement, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das cautioned on the need to remain vigilant towards inflation.
RBI's GDP growth forecast and inflation forecast for FY24 has been retained at 6.5% and 5.4% respectively.

RBI's press release also pointed out that out of the total value of ₹3.56 lakh crore of ₹2000 banknotes in circulation as on May 19, 2023, ₹3.42 lakh crore has been received back leaving only ₹0.14 lakh crore in circulation as at the close of business on September 29, 2023. This means that effectively 96% of ₹2000 notes have since been returned.
Importantly, the RBI has also reiterated that Rs 2000 banknotes will continue to be legal tender.

Withdrawal of ₹2,000 notes by the Reserve Bank on May 19 and the subsequent near total return of the currency to the system has buoyed deposit accretion to a six-year high of ₹191.6 lakh crore in June, according to a report.
Earlier this month, the RBI said more than three-fourths of the total 3.62 lakh crore of ₹2,000 bank notes have come back to the system by way of deposits (over 85%) and the rest as note exchanges.
According to Sanjay Agarwal, a senior director with Care Ratings, deposits witnessed a healthy on-year growth of 13% to ₹191.6 lakh crore, which is the highest in the past six years (since March 2017) in the fortnight ending June 30, partly supported by the withdrawal of the ₹2,000 currency notes and higher interest rates on deposits.
Deposits rose 13% in the reporting fortnight and sequentially, it expanded by 3.2% to ₹191.6 lakh crore and in absolute terms, deposits rose by ₹22 lakh crore in the trailing 12-month period when it had stood at Rs 185.7 lakh crore.
As a result, the spread between credit and deposits growth dropped to 326 basis points in the reporting fortnight as against 875 bps in November 2022, which was the largest. This can be attributed to a rise in deposits in the last two to three fortnights.
This has had the short-term weighted average call rate (WACR) rising to 5.94% as of June 30 from 4.3% as of July 31, 2022, primarily due to the elevated policy rates. The WACR had peaked at 6.69% as of May 4, 2023.

The e-commerce giant has been offering Amazon Pay Cash Load option by which cash can be deposited to your Amazon Pay balance account.
This can be done during the delivery of any order that is purchased via cash on delivery option. The purchased product should be eligible for cash load. A customer can handover the cash along with Rs 2,000 note to the delivery associate and get it deposited into Amazon Pay balance account.&nbsp;

State Bank of India has said that the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes might boost the consumption, bank deposit and repayment of loans along with the overall economic growth. The report further said that the consumption demand may be boosted by Rs 55,000 crore.
&ldquo;One of the major benefits of withdrawal of Rs 2000 note might be the immediate uptick in consumption demand. As per our estimate consumption demand may be frontloaded by Rs 55,000 crore,&rdquo; the SBI report said.&nbsp;
The report foresees an uptick in sales of consumer durables and boutique furniture. "Around Rs 55,000 crore could be withdrawn by public from ~Rs 92,000 crore saving bank deposits to be made cumulatively through Rs 2000 notes. This should give consumption boost along with increasing the velocity of money,&rdquo; the report said.
The bank also said that though RBI's decision to withdraw Rs 2,000 notes won't affect the liquidity, some amount would come into loan accounts increase bank deposits. SBI also highlights that there has been an increase in total deposits of Rs 3.3 lakh crore during the fortnight ended 2 Jun&rsquo;23. The lender is expecting the current account savings account deposits to increase by Rs 1.5 lakh crore.&nbsp;
The Reserve Bank of India announced that Rs 2,000 note would be withdrawn from circulation as part of currency management a month ago on 19th May.
