44 men charged in Australia on suspicion of child exploitation

Australian Federal Police (AFP) arrested 44 men across the nation on suspicion of possessing and producing child abuse material. Sixteen children had been "removed from harm" in the process, the AFP said. The arrests were made following a year-long investigation into images and videos that were shared online in coordination with the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE). Arrests of the accused, all aged between 19 and 57 were made in every Australian state. The arrests numbered 11 in Victoria, 11 in Queensland, nine in South Australia, eight in New South Wales, seven in Western Australia, five in Tasmania and one in the Australian Capital Territory. AFP further laid a total of 350 charges, all related to possessing or producing child exploitation material. The men had allegedly used a cloud storage platform to share the abuse. The AFP described some evidence as among "the most abhorrent produced". The arrest men worked in industries including construction, transport, law enforcement and hospitality.

PTI,&nbsp;Mumbai:&nbsp;NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing shock over the kind of language used by Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari in a letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray over reopening places of worship amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In his letter to Modi, the Rajya Sabha MP, whose party is a key ally in the Shiv Sena-led MVA government, said he was pained by the erosion of standards of conduct by the high Constitutional office of the Honourable Governor.
In the letter to the chief minister on reopening of temples, Koshyari had asked, "Have you suddenly turned secular, the term you hated?" Pawar said the Prime Minister had given very appropriate slogan of do gaj ki doori to curb the spread of COVID-19 and added the Maharashtra government is also planning a campaign to make people aware of the importance of social distancing.
The former Union minister referred to the huge crowds some temples in the state like that of Lord Vitthal in Pandhapur, Siddhivinayak in Mumbai, Sai Baba in Shirdi and others, witness on normal days.
In such places, it is almost impossible to maintain safe distance between people. Keeping this in view, the Government of Maharashtra had decided to stagger the decision regarding opening up of places of worship, Pawar said.
The NCP patriarch said he agreed the Governor can have independent views and opinion on the sensitive issue and appreciated the latters prerogative to convey his views to the chief minister.
However, I am shocked and surprised to see the letter of the Governor released to the media and the kind of language used in the letter, Pawar said.
The veteran politician said separately on Twitter that the kind of language used in the letter does not behove well for a person who holds a constitutional position.
The NCP president said he is sure the prime minister, too, would have noticed the intemperate language used in the Governors letter.
Pawar said the word secular is part of the Preamble of the Constitution and it shields all religions.
Hence, the Chair of the Chief Minister must uphold such tenets of the Constitution, he said.
Unfortunately, Hon. Governors letter to the Chief Minister invokes the connotation as if written to the leader of a political party.
I firmly believe that in a democracy, free exchange of views between the Hon. Governor and the Hon. Chief Minister must take place.
However, the tone and tenor used must always be in keeping with the stature of the constitutional post occupied by the individuals, Pawar said.
The veteran leader said that looking at the turn of events, the chief minister was left with no option but to release his reply to the Governor in the press.
Pawar said he fully endorsed the chief ministers decision on this issue.

The report said South Asia region stands to lose $622 billion from the school closures in the present scenario or up to $880 billion in a more pessimistic scenario.&nbsp;The report titled "Beaten or Broken? Informality and Coivid-19 in South Asia" claims that South Asia is set to plunge into its worst-ever recession in 2020 as the devastating impacts of the pandemic on the region's economies linger.

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: The prolonged closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India may cause a loss of over USD 400 billion in the country's future earnings, besides substantial learning losses, according to a World Bank report.
South Asia region stands to lose USD 622 billion from the school closures in the present scenario or up to USD 880 billion in a more pessimistic scenario, it said, adding while the regional loss is largely driven by India, all countries will lose substantial shares of their GDP.
The report titled "Beaten or Broken? Informality and COVID-19 in South Asia" claims that South Asia is set to plunge into its worst-ever recession in 2020 as the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on the region's economies linger.
"Temporary school closures in all South Asian countries have had major implications for students. They have kept 391 million students out of school in primary and secondary education, further complicating efforts to resolve the learning crisis,&rdquo; said the report.
&ldquo;While most governments have made enormous efforts to mitigate the impact of school closures, it has been difficult to engage children through remote learning initiatives," it said.
The report also noted that the pandemic may cause up to 5.5 million students to drop out from the education system and cause substantial learning losses, which will have a lifetime impact on the productivity of a generation of students.
"Most school systems closed in March, and -- though there are important exceptions -- countries are starting to reopen or have already opened their schools. Children have been out of school for approximately 5 months. Being out of school for that long means that children not only stop learning new things, they also forget some of what they have learned.
"The projected learning loss for the region is 0.5 years of learning-adjusted years of schooling (LAYS), falling from 6.5 LAYS to 6.0 LAYS, an enormous setback from recent advances in schooling," it said.
The &lsquo;Learning Adjusted Year of Schooling&rsquo; (LAYS) concept, introduced by the World Bank, seeks to combine access and learning outcomes into a single measure.
It combines quantity (years of schooling) and quality (how much kids know at a given grade level) into a single summary measure of human capital in a society.
The report has projected that based on country data on household labor incomes, the average child in South Asia may lose USD 4,400 in lifetime earnings once having entered the labour market, equivalent to 5 percent of total earnings.
"These projections are based on what we currently know about returns to schooling, using the reduced level of learning caused by the crisis. Summing these numbers for all children in South Asia, the region stands to lose USD 622 billion from the school closures in the present scenario, or up to USD 880 billion in a more pessimistic scenario.
"While the regional loss is largely driven by India, all countries will lose substantial shares of their GDP. For reference, note that South Asian governments spend only USD 400 billion per year in total on primary and secondary education. The total loss in economic output from the current closures is hence substantially higher than what countries currently spend on education," it said.
The novel corona virus has infected over 3.7 crore people across the globe claiming over 10.5 lakh lives.
India's COVID-19 caseload stands at 71.2 lakhs while the death toll is 1.09 lakh as on Monday.
Universities and schools across the country were ordered shut on March 16 to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. On March 25, the Centre announced a nationwide lockdown. While several restrictions have been eased gradually in different phases of the 'unlock' since June 8, educational institutions continue to remain closed.

On Sunday, Pakistan reported 666 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of infections to 318,932, according to the Ministry of National Health Services.
Minister for Planning Asad Umar in a post on Twitter said that mini lockdowns have been imposed in some cities after &ldquo;positivity rate crossed 2 per cent after remaining below 2 per cent for six weeks&rdquo;.
Positivity rate is the percentage of positive results out of the total number of tests sampled.
Mini smart lockdowns have been imposed in Karachi, Islamabad and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
"Instructions have been issued to administrations across the country to ensure that precautionary measures are followed. But like in the past, success is impossible without the cooperation of the people," he said in the tweet.
Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood also asked people to follow guidelines and avoid big gatherings.
"Large public gatherings must not take place. These alone can unleash a second wave," he said.
According to the health ministry, Punjab province on Sunday confirmed 203 new COVID-19 cases. It was for the first time since August 15 that Punjab recorded more than 200 cases.
Sindh reported 140,131 cases, Punjab 100,687, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 38,329, Islamabad 17,296, Balochistan 15,520, Gilgit-Baltistan 3,924 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir 3,045 cases.
The National Command and Control Centre (NCOC), the nerve centre to synergise and articulate unified national effort against COVID-19, on Thursday imposed restrictions on large-scale public gatherings in marriage halls after rise in the COVID-19 infections in recent weeks.
The restrictions have come ahead of a big rally announced by the opposition parties, under the banner Pakistan Democratic Movement, on October 16 at Gujranwala in Punjab province against the Imran Khan-led government.
However, the Opposition leaders have rejected the call to avoid big rallies.
