Lakhimpur Kheri violence: SC steps in, CJI-led bench to hear matter

The Supreme Court on Wednesday took suo moto cognizance of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence. Chief Justice-led apex court bench will hear the Lakhimpur Kheri violence case on Thursday. The court will take place at 11 am.

The violence in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri, that left eight people including four farmers dead left the country shaken and led to an uproar with opposition parties slamming the government for the alleged involvement of a union minister's son.

On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh lawyers appealed to the Chief Justice seeking an investigation by the CBI under the supervision of the Supreme Court into the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.  Lawyers asked Chief Justice NV Ramana to direct the Home Ministry to ensure the filing of a First Information Report and punishment for ministers involved in Sunday's incident. 

Meanwhile, UP CM Adityanath briefed PM Modi on the Lakhimpur Kheri situation. MoS Ajay Mishra whose son is accused of running his car over protesters met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday.
