Sonia Gandhi's mother dies in Italy; PM Modi, President Murmu, others condole Paola Maino's death

Congress party president Sonia Gandhi's mother passed away at her home in Italy.
Paola Maino, who was in her 90s, died on 27 August 2022, and the funeral took place on 30 August.

Sonia Gandhi had left for Italy on 23 August to visit her ailing mother. Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi reportedly attended the funeral.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted condolences, and said that his thoughts were with the family. President Droupadi Murmu expressed sadness, saying, "May God give her strength to bear this irreparable loss."

The Congress party in a statement said, "Congress family expresses its deepest condolences on the sad demise of Mrs Paola Maino. We pray for the departed soul and stand in solidarity with the bereaved family."

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, "I join my father and other family members in conveying our heartfelt condolences to the Gandhi family."
