A Delhi Court on Thursday granted bail to former JNU student Umar Khalid in a case related to the violence in Delhi on February 24, 2020 over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.
The court said that Khalid had been chargesheeted on insignificant material which is unwarranted, adding that there is no evidence of Khalid’s presence at the scene of crime.
Opposing his bail, the prosecution had argued that many people related to the ‘riotous mob’ are yet to be identified, but the Court said that Khalid cannot be incarcerated in jail for infinity just because others who were part of the mob have not yet been identified and arrested.
The charge sheet also accused Umar Khalid of ‘criminal conspiracy’ in connection with former AAP counsellor Tahir Hussain and alleged that he had planned violence during the former US President Donald Trump's visit to Delhi. The court went on to say that it could not find any rationale in the act of the police involving Khalid in this isolated case for the offence of conspiracy.
The court, however gave him bail on several conditions - Khalid has been asked to furnish a personal bond of Rs 20,000, appear before the Court on every date of hearing, furnish his mobile number to the police upon his release from the jail and also install the “Aarogya Setu App”.
