The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent pandemics to control its spread have caused massive losses for India's apparel and fashion industry. According to data shared by Redseer Consulting with ET, the sector clocked a recovery of just 35 per cent compared to sales in January. The steepest dip was observed in April, when sales were just 10 per cent of pre-lockdown levels. Offline sales observed a fall from around 92% in January to 88-89% by mid-June. In contrast, online sales rose from 7% to around 11% in the last 6 months. But the fashion industry operates 98% through offline channels so the sluggish growth in online retail is just not enough to make up for brick and mortar losses.
