The all-important 5th Test in Birmingham may not have started as per India's liking but the opening day surely ended with India having their noses slightly ahead of England. The visitors ended day 1 at 338/7.

Ben Stokes' decision to put India into bat seemed to be the right call as the visitors found themselves wanting at 98/5. But in walked Rishabh Pant and turned the tide against the Three Lions. He smashed his 5th Test hundred and stitched a 222-run 6th wicket partnership with Ravindra Jadeja to take India to safety.

Pant eventually fell for a 111-ball-146 but Jadeja remained unbeaten on 83. Team India would be hoping that the southpaw adds some valuable runs on Day 2 to further strengthen their grip on the match.
