Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane might just face a heavy demotion in BCCI's annual central contract due to their extended poor form..
Although the veteran batters have received a lot of support from the Team management, they have failed to deliver results on the ground which has further increased their chances of demotion. While Ajinkya Rahane could score only 136 runs, Pujara got just 124 runs in the recently concluded 3-match Test series in South Africa that India lost. Rahane recently lost his Test vice captainship as well.

As per a Times of India report, it is only possible for the senior batters to retain the spot if head coach Rahul Dravid decides in favour of them in the central contract that ideally is the indicator of cricketers' performance in a particular season. BCCI has 4 groups, A+, A, B and C, carrying annual retainership of 7, 5, 3 and 1 crore respectively.
Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul who are the front runners for future captaincy might join the A+ group that features Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah.
