Indian wrestler Sunil Kumar won the bronze medal in the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg category at the Asian Games 2026 on Wednesday, becoming India’s first wrestling medallist at the continental event.
Sunil defeated the Philippines’ Callum Johnston Roberts 9-0 by technical superiority to secure the bronze medal. He maintained control throughout the bout and did not allow Roberts to score a point, continuing to add to his tally before sealing the victory.
The medal also made Sunil the first Indian to win two Greco-Roman medals at the Asian Games.
Earlier on Wednesday, India secured gold in the mixed trap team shooting event through Neeru Dhanda and Kynan Chenai at the ongoing Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. The duo also set a new Games record.
Neeru and Kynan scored 34, surpassing the Asian Games record of 30 set by Qatar earlier this year. Qatar won silver with 32 points, while China secured bronze with 23.
Neeru had earlier won the women’s trap individual gold. The mixed trap team gold marked India’s first-ever gold medal in the Trap Mixed Team event.
India also secured gold in the women’s compound archery team event. The Indian team of Jyothi Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep defeated China 238-234 in the final.
With the score, the Indian team equalled South Korea’s world record of 238, set in 2014, to claim the gold medal.
