For the first time ever, a city in the United States of America has banned caste discrimination.
Seattle in Washington state outlawed caste bias after the local council added caste to the city's anti-discrimination laws on 21 February 2023.
The sole Indian-American on the council, Kshama Sawant, said that the move does not single out any one community.
While Dalit activist-led outfits like Equality Labs supported the move, others like the Hindu American Foundation and the Coalition of Hindus of North America opposed it, according to the news agency Associated Press.
