The United Kingdom laid eyes on Queen Elizabeth II's coffin for the first time on 11 September 2022, as a hearse made its way from Balmoral Castle in Aberdeenshire to the late monarch's official Scottish residence of Holyroodhouse Palace in the capital city of Edinburgh.

Thousands of people were seen along the route, waiting to catch a glimpse of the casket. It was the first stage of the late Queen's final journey. Elizabeth's funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey in London on 19 September 2022.

A day earlier, Prince William and wife Kate, and Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle interacted with people paying tributes at the gates of Windsor Castle.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch, breathed her last at Balmoral on 8 September.
