Navjot Singh Sidhu, the rebel Congress leader in Punjab, is likely to head the grand old party's state unit, most source-based reports say, but Punjab in-charge Harish Rawat says no decision has been taken yet.
Rawat, the Congress General Secretary in-charge of Punjab, who met interim chief Sonia Gandhi, late on Thursday evening, denied that Sidhu was being elevated amid his open tussle with chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh.
While Captain had flown to Delhi to meet Sonia Gandhi amid a public spat with Sidhu, the former Indian cricketer also was in the national capital last week where he met Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.
Captain and Sidhu have been at loggerheads for months in the run-up to the Punjab assembly elections and the infighting has strained the Congress’ campaign ahead of the 2022 assembly polls.
Sidhu cozying up to AAP, which appears to be a serious contender in the upcoming Punjab polls, has only worsened the crisis for the ruling Congress.
