In an unusual decision, Spain's embassy denied visas to 21 Indian wrestlers, who were to compete at the U-23 World Championship in Pontevedra.

The Spain embassy took the decision on suspicion that they will not leave the territory before the expiry of visas.

Out of the 30 grapplers picked by the Wrestling Federation of India, only nine were granted visas.

Commenting on the bizarre situation, WFI assistant secretary Vinod Tomar said that Indian wrestlers are strong medal contenders but they were denied the opportunity to shine on the big stage.

Interestingly, out of 10 freestyle wrestlers, only one got the visa but three freestyle coaches got the nod to travel to Spain.
