The Kolkata Knight Riders(KKR) on Wednesday appointed Shreyas Iyer as its new captain. KKR bought the former Delhi Capitals skipper for ₹12.25 crore in the IPL 2022 mega auction.

Eoin Morgan was KKR's skipper in the 2021 edition. Despite the Knights reaching the final, Morgan had a disastrous run with the bat and went unsold in the mega auction. Before the auction, there were reports of KKR going all out for Iyer as they needed a captain. When they did, the writing was evident on the wall.

Iyer had captained Delhi in the 2020 IPL, a season that saw the Capitals finish at the 2nd spot on the table. He was ruled out of the previous edition due to a shoulder injury and when he returned for the 2nd-leg of the cash-rich league, Delhi had already found a new captain in Rishabh Pant.
