At a time when global sports bodies are banning transgender women, German Football Federation has done the opposite. German football body has allowed all transgender, intersex, and non-binary players to decide on their own whether they want to play in men's or women's teams.

A new regulation has been passed by the German football federation for gender-nonconforming players with the civil status 'diverse' or 'unspecified'.

The new rules have already been tested at the local level by the Berlin federation since 2019.

Notably, sports such as swimming, cycling and rugby have banned transgender women from participating in international events. While FIFA, World Athletics and World Netball Federation are currently reviewing their transgender eligibility policies, German Football body has decided to buck the trend.
