A fierce contest between India and Spain in the crossover match of the FIH Women's World Cup ended in heartbreak for the Savita Punia-led Indian side after they lost the contest 1-0.

Spain, with a goal in the final minutes of the game crushed India's bid to enter the quarterfinals.

While India presented a spirited fight in the first 3 quarters of the game with the captain thwarting most of the attacks, the struggle to convert chances successfully hurt India badly.

The hosts who struggled equally to find a goal, outclassed India in the final quarter. Spain's Marta Segu netted a goal in the 57th minute to set a date with Australia in the quarterfinals.

On the other hand, India will meet Canada for the 9th to 16th place classification match on July 11th.
