Sunil Gavaskar has put his weight behind KL Rahul and played down concerns over his form leading up to the T20 World Cup 2022.

After India beat Australia in the T20 series decider, the former India captain told the host broadcaster that Rahul did what the team expected him to do. After getting a fifty in the first game, he had to throw his bat at everything in the 2nd T20 since it was reduced to 8-overs a side game. "He sacrificed his wicket for the team," Gavaskar added.

KL Rahul's place in India's playing XI has been questionable ever since he returned from injury for the Asia Cup. He managed 132 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of 122 in that event.

Rahul's approach in the powerplay was also criticised with many experts believing that he didn't play with a very good strike rate. But the Indian vice-captain put those doubts to rest with a 35-ball 55 in the first T20I against Australia in Mohali.
