Singer Hariharan, the voice behind several soulful melodies like 'Hum Saath Saath Hain' to 'Yun Hi Chala Chal Rahi' has opened up on how the purpose of songs in films have changed greatly.
Hariharan who's been in the industry for 40 years said that new composers use vocals more like sound effects. He also noted that people are now looking for different textures, high-pitched voices.
He obseved after the OTT platforms came in, songs are no longer a part of the story, they are more jingles to sell a product.
However the Padma Shri recipient is optimistic that not all is lost given there are a lot of good lyricists and young music directors, who are quite minimalistic in their compositions.
