Celebs flaunting their wealth at events and outings is nothing new. Whether it is expensive bags or designer clothes, or shoes or jewellery, whatever our stars wear becomes a style statement.
Priyanka Chopra Jonas, turned cover-girl for Vogue India recently. In a stunning red mesh gown, she chose to wear a mangalsutra for one of her looks. But the magazine cover is now being slammed by netizens, who are calling it a 'blatant show of oppression'.
In August, Italian luxury brand Bvlgari appointed Priyanka Chopra as its global brand ambassador. The company is known for its high-end gemstones, jewellery and watches. As part of their new collection, Bvlgari launched its first-ever exclusive Indian jewellery, a gold mangalsutra, priced at a whopping Rs 3,49,000. Priyanka shared the Vogue cover on her Instagram handle, flaunting the 18-karat luxurious piece of jewellery.
A section of people are now lashing out at the actor for promoting patriarchy and oppression with the luxury mangalsutra. Taking a dig at Priyanka, a tweet said, "girlbosses will exploit feminism mercilesslessly for personal economic gain and then expect applause for it". Netizens are asking why Priyanka chose to flaunt a symbol that denotes decades-old patriarchy.
Many others also applauded her, saying, "reimagining the mangalsutra with Bvlgari is a stroke of genius". Some backed the actor saying, "how is incorporating Indian culture into her work wrong?"
The mangalsutra, called the 'Bvlgari Bvlgari necklace' has a diamond in the centre with small black onyx stones, covered in double-logo gold circles. The brand describes the necklace as a “contemporary statement of elegance” adding that, "recalling the curved inscriptions of ancient Roman coins, the double logo is a timeless trademark of Bvlgari’s creativity to this day."
