Survey shows obesity more prevalent among Indians in the past 15 years

One in every 16 women and one in every 25 men in India are obese according to the fifth and the last round of the National Family Health Survey. Cases of obesity has increased among Indians in the last 15 years. 

What does NFHS data say? 

According to the fifth round of NFHS conducted between 2019 and 2021, about 6.4 percent women and 4 percent men in the age group of 15-49 are obese. About 17.6 percent women and 18.9 percent men in the same age group are overweight but not obese. This means that almost a quarter of young women in India are overweight. 

Attention given to age in the survey 

According to the survey, in 2019-21, on an average, 12.6 per cent women in the top wealth group in India were found to be obese. Age was also taken into consideration in the survey and it found that 11 percent women between ages 40 and 49 are overweight.
