According to a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, zero-calorie sweeteners such as erythritol may increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and blood clots.

Researchers noted that individuals with existing risk factors for heart disease, were twice as likely to experience a heart attack or stroke if they had the highest levels of erythritol in their blood.

Artificial sugar substitutes aren't necessarily a safe or healthy alternative and should be consumed in moderation, study authors concluded.
