India called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions between Russia and Ukraine as Vladimir Putin declared war on the neighbouring country.

At the UN Security Council emergency meet called on the Ukraine crisis, India cautioned that the situation is in danger of spiraling into a major crisis.

As the UNSC meeting was underway, during which UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres made a direct appeal to Putin to “stop your troops from attacking Ukraine”, the Russian leader announced a military operation in eastern Ukraine.

India expressed its “deep concern” over the developments, which, if not handled carefully, may well undermine the peace and security of the region.

US President Joe Biden has blasted Vladimir Putin over an "unprovoked" attack on Ukraine. He said the United States and its allies will respond in a united and decisive way
