In a fresh blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal, Arjun Singh, a Member of Parliament, switched to the Trinamool Congress. The move came days after Singh had accused BJP's state leadership of hindering the work of politicians with mass connect.

TMC leader and party chief Mamata Banerjee's nephew welcomed Arjun Singh into the party. Abhishek Banerjee tweeted, "Extending a warm welcome to Arjun Singh, who rejected the divisive forces at BJP and joined the TMC family today. People across the nation are suffering and they need us now more than ever. Let's keep the fight alive!"

Arjun Singh had been a TMC leader before defecting to the BJP ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Subsequently, he had won from the Barrackpore constituency.

Ever since TMC's victory in the 2021 state elections, a slew of BJP leaders has quit and joined the ruling party.
