Just days after taking oath in the JD(U)-RJD-led government in Bihar, Kartik Kumar resigned from the Cabinet. Kumar resigned on 31 August 2022 amid Opposition protests seeking his ouster over a 2014 kidnapping case.

Kumar, an RJD MLC, had initially been assigned the Law Ministry, but moved to the less significant Sugarcane department as Opposition BJP raised the kidnapping charges.

Kartik Kumar was believed to have been chosen for the Cabinet as part of RJD leader and Bihar Deputy CM Tejashwi Yadav's outreach towards Bhumihars. The Bhumihars are a politically powerful community considered largely sympathetic towards the BJP.
