The Chief of Congress' Karnataka unit broke down while speaking to reporters on May 13, 2023.

The Congress appeared set to win the Karnataka elections, as it took a commanding lead over the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Shivakumar got emotional while talking about his time in prison in an alleged money laundering case. He said that he cannot forget Sonia Gandhi coming to meet him in jail.

He added that he had promised Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi, and Mallikarjun Kharge that he would ensure Congress' victory in Karnataka, and "deliver" the state to the party's "fold".
