Communal clashes were reported from Rajasthan's Karauli on April 2. The cause was alleged stone-pelting at a motorcycle rally passing through a Muslim-dominated area, as per reports.
The bike rally was reportedly organised on the occasion of Nav Samvatsar, the first day of the new year according to the Hindu calendar. Following the alleged stone-pelting, violence broke out, and some shops and vehicles were also allegedly set on fire.
Many people were injured in the incident, of which 27 were treated and sent home, 10 are undergoing treatment in the hospital and 3 seriously injured were referred to Jaipur. The injured were admitted to the District General Hospital. Among the injured people four were police officers.
Section 144 was imposed in Karauli from 6:30 pm on April 2 to 12 am on April 4. "Section 144 imposed in Karauli from 6:30 pm today, April 2, to 12 am on April 4, in connection with a case of stone-pelting at a ‘Shobha Yatra’(bike rally) in the city. Internet to also be shut on April 2 and 3 (till midnight)," said Karauli DM Rajendra Singh Shekhawat
Over 600 police personnel with around 50 senior officers have been posted to keep the situation in check, as per a PTI report.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted that he had spoken to the state police chief and ordered strict action against rioters.
The BJP blamed Congress' "appeasement politics" for the violence. Kirodi Lal Meena said, "This appeasement politics is so dangerous. This is government's failure. In Rajasthan, Hindus can't even celebrate Nav Samvatsar. This is the result of the Gehlot government and police's shoddy law and order administration."
