A political war is breaking out over the land subsidence nightmare being faced by the residents of Joshimath in Uttarakhand.

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge on 9 January said that the adverse event should be declared a national calamity by the government, and big-ticket infrastructure projects should be paused.

He added that those affected by the sinking land should be given adequate compensation from the PM-CARES Fund, instead of just ₹5000.

In response, Uttarakhand minister Subodh Uniyal said that Congress should not politicise the matter, and instead help the people.
