Sidhu Moose Wala death anniversary: A look back on the successful career of the singer

Sidhu Moose Wala, a famous Punjabi singer and Congress leader, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Mansa district of Punjab, a day after the AAP-ruled state government withdrew his security cover.

Born as Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu in Mansa district’s Moosa village, the rapper started his career as a songwriter with ‘License’ by Ninja. He debuted as a singer with the duet song ‘G Wagon.’

In 2017, Sidhu got his career breakthrough with the hit song ‘So High,’ which was released on his YouTube channel. The song, a collaboration with Byg Byrd, won him the 2017 Best Lyricist award at the Brit Asia TV Music Awards.

His success spree continued with singles like ‘Issa Jatt’, ‘Tochan’, ‘Selfmade’, ‘Famous’ and ‘Warning Shots’.

In 2018, Sidhu released his first music album, PBX 1.

Sidhu was listed among the top 50 new artists by The Guardian in 2020. Two of his songs, out of the ten that ranked on the UK Asian chart, were chartbusters.

His 2021 studio album, ‘Moosetape’, was a global hit, trending on Canadian Hot 100, UK Asian and New Zealand Hot charts.

Sidhu Moose Wala was known for his controversial lyrics and glorifying gun culture.

In 2020, he was booked under the Arms Act on charges of promoting violence and gun culture in his song ‘Panj golian.’

Just two weeks before his death, Sidhu released a song called ‘The Last Ride,’ a tribute to American rapper Tupac Shakur.

Apart from singing, Sidhu Moose Wala also tried his luck at acting. He played the lead role in the 2021 film ‘Moosa Jatt.’ He also featured in ‘Yes I Am Student,’ ‘Teri Meri Jodi’, and ‘Jattan Da Munda Gaun Lagya.’
