Elgar Parishad Case: Father Stan Swamy dies ahead of Bombay HC hearing on bail

Priest and activist Stan Swamy, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoists links case, died on Monday. The news was communicated by his counsel to the Bombay High Court when the court took up his bail plea.

Swamy’s lawyers had moved the Bombay High Court on Monday morning, seeking an urgent hearing on his medical bail plea after the 84-year-old's health took a turn for the worse on Sunday and he was put on ventilator support. Swamy had sought interim bail on grounds of the pandemic citing his various health issues, including Parkinson’s disease.

Swamy, who has been hospitalised since May, was in the Intensive Care Unit and was put on a ventilator on Sunday after he had difficulty breathing and his oxygen levels were fluctuating.
