Delhi Covid explosion: third wave is on, says govt

Delhi is likely to report around 10,000 new Covid cases today, Health Minister Satyendar Jain has said. The minister added that the third wave of coronavirus has set in.

The latest spike in Covid-19 cases in the Capital has been fuelled by the new Omicron variant of Covid-19.

The minister said that genome sequencing of all Covid samples is not possible currently and only 300 to 400 samples are being sequenced.

Delhi has the second-highest number of Omicron cases in the country after Maharashtra. The Capital has so far confirmed 464 cases of the new variant.

The Delhi government has clamped restrictions after the Covid explosion in the Capital. Delhi had on Tuesday reported nearly 5.500 Covid cases.

Weekend curfew has been imposed in the Capital and private offices have been asked to work with 50% of staff in offices. Non-essential government staff has been asked to work from home.
