A war of words has erupted between the Centre and Twitter, after the social media's statement earlier on the govt's new IT rules and a Delhi police notice.
After Twitter flagged concerns over the "potential threat to freedom of expression" and intimidation tactics by the police, the government, in a scathing statement, told the social media giant to "stop beating around the bush and comply with the laws of the land".
The govt said, law making and policy formulations is the sole prerogative of the sovereign and Twitter is just a social media platform, it has no basis in dictating what should India's legal policy framework should be.
On Twitter raising concerns about the safety of its staff in India, the govt assured that representatives of social media companies including Twitter are and will always remain safe in India and there is no threat to their personal safety and security.
