U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi departed Taiwan on Wednesday after a visit that heightened tensions with China.

While Pelosi said that the US will not abandon its commitment to the self-governing island of Taiwan, China said that her visit is by no means a defense or protection of democracy, but a provocation and violation of China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China conducted military drills in retaliation to U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan and announced it will hold more such exercises from August 4 to August 7 across multiple locations.

Pelosi arrived in Taiwan late Tuesday, becoming the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit the self-ruled island claimed by China.
