Messaging service WhatsApp has announced that it will soon let users fully encrypt their chat backups.

While messages on the platform are allready end-to-end encrypted, WhatsApp has said it will soon roll out encrypted chat backups for both iOS and Android users. The encrypted files will be uploaded to either iCloud or Google Drive depending on the device, and users that opt for encryption will be asked to save a 64-digit key.

Moreover, users will be able to create their own password that will be tied to the encryption key and stored in a physical hardware security module maintained by Facebook.
