West Bengal suspends UK-Kolkata flights due to surge in Covid-19 cases

Direct flights to Kolkata from the UK will be temporarily suspended from January 3 due to the spread of the Omicron variant of the novel coronavirus, the West Bengal govt announced on Thursday. 

Flights from at-risk countries listed by the central govt will also not be allowed into the state. Passengers coming from non-risk countries will have to mandatorily undergo Covid test on arrival, according to a statement issued by the West Bengal government.

On Wednesday, the state reported more than 1,000 daily cases after a gap of 177 days, a health bulletin said. Kolkata registered 540 of the 1,089 new cases
