Congress leader Rahul Gandhi reached Gujarat’s Surat city on Thursday to record his statement in a criminal defamation suit filed by a BJP MLA over his comments on the "Modi surname".
During the hearing, Rahul told the Surat court that he didn't mean to target any community and that it was just sarcasm.
BJP MLA from Surat, Purnesh Modi, had accused Rahul of "defaming the entire Modi community" with his comments at a rally ahead of the national election.
At a public meeting in Karnataka on April 13, 2019 the then Congress president named Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi and said he wonders how come ‘all the thieves have Modi as a common surname’.
