UP teachers' body says 1,621 died of Covid while on poll duty

A teacher's association in Uttar Pradesh has claimed that over 1600 teachers died after contracting Covid-19 while on duty during the panchayat polls in the state, the Hindustan Times has reported.

The Uttar Pradeshiya Prathmik Shikshak Sangh has demanded a compensation of ₹1 crore for the next of kin of the deceased.

In a letter to chief minister Yogi Adityanath, the teachers’ association has named 1,621 government school staff, their schools, districts, the dates of death and their mobile numbers, the report said.

The list includes those who succumbed to the coronavirus disease between the first week of April and May 16, two weeks after the counting day.
