UP: Aligarh may become Harigarh, panchayat body sends plan to Yogi govt

The city of famous Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh may soon have a new name.
The district panchayat has passed a proposal to rename the city of locks to Harigarh and sent it to the Yogi Adityanath government.

A proposal for changing Aligarh’s name was unanimously passed at a meeting of the newly elected district Panchayat on Monday.

The final decision for renaming a place is taken by the state government.

Rightwing groups have for long demanded the name change claiming that Harigarh is the city's historical name.

Not just Aligarh, the zila panchayat of Mainpuri has demanded to rename it as Mayan Nagar. Firozabad panchayat wats it to be renamed as Chandra Nagar.

There is also demand to rename Sambhal as Prithviraj Nagar and Sultanpur as Kushbhawanpur, claiming that the city was founded by Lord Ram’s son Kush.

The Yogi Adityanath government has changed the names of several historical cities. Allahabad is is now Prayagraj, Faizabad is Ayodhya, Mughal Sarai is now Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayay Nagar.
