Two minor sisters were found hanging from a tree in a village in Kokrajhar district. Family members and several organisations claiming have said it’s a case of rape and murder.
The incident took place inside a small forest in Abhayakuti village, where the bodies of the two siblings were recovered on Friday evening.
Bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at Kokrajhar police station.
Speaking to the media, a police officer said, "A case has been registered. A preliminary investigation suggested that the two girls suspectedly ended their lives. We will be able to tell after receiving the post-mortem reports."
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is visiting Kokrajhar on Sunday to took stock of the matter. The Kokrajhar administration has already set up a helipad for the arrival of the Chief Minister.
Rabha Students Union and several organisations have sought justice for victims.
Speaking to the media an organisation member said, "The two girls were raped and murdered. We demand the government to take strict action against the accused."
