OpenAI is developing a customisable upgrade to ChatGPT to address concerns about bias in artificial intelligence. The company has worked to mitigate political and other biases and wants to allow more diverse views. Customisation is seen as a way forward, although there will be limits on the system's behaviour.

ChatGPT uses generative AI to produce answers mimicking human speech. The technology behind the chatbot is a focus for companies in the generative AI industry as they grapple with how to establish guardrails for this nascent technology. OpenAI explains that ChatGPT's responses are trained on large datasets of text from the internet, and then humans review a smaller dataset, given guidelines for different situations, and offer to describe different viewpoints on controversial topics.

Microsoft's new Bing search engine, powered by OpenAI, has received criticism for potentially dangerous answers. However, user feedback is being used to improve the AI chatbot's functionality before a wider rollout.
