Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, which developed the viral ChatGPT chatbot, told US lawmakers on Tuesday that regulating artificial intelligence was essential.

He warned that if AI goes wrong, it can be "a very dangerous thing".

In the hearing, Senator Richard Blumenthal opened with a computer-generated voice reading a text written by the bot. The voice sounded remarkably similar to Blumenthal's own. Blumenthal said that if people were listening from home, they might have thought that the voice was his.

This incident highlighted the potential dangers of AI, and Altman's comments show that he is aware of these risks.
