Apple has warned users in India and 91 other countries about a "mercenary spyware" attack. This form of attack stands apart from typical cybercrimes as it aims to illicitly access a user's device.

Notably, mercenary spyware attacks, such as Pegasus from the NSO Group, are exceptionally rare and significantly more advanced than standard cybercriminal activity or consumer malware.

Distinctive nature of mercenary spyware attacks

The threat notification mail sent by Apple stresses that mercenary spyware attacks, unlike common malware, are highly unusual and are tailored to specific individuals.

These attacks are known for their advanced level of sophistication, prompting Apple to emphasise the importance of taking the warning seriously.

The notification explains that the attack targets specific individuals due to their identity and activities, highlighting the severity and precise nature of the threat.

Apple's warning to users

The notification that users are expected to receive contains a clear message that users are likely being targeted due to who they are or what they do.

Despite the difficulty in achieving absolute certainty when detecting such attacks, Apple expresses a high level of confidence in the warning and urges users to take it seriously.

Protective Measures for Users

In response to this alarming development, Apple has taken proactive measures by updating its support page with essential tips for users who may have been targeted by the mercenary spyware attack.

Since 2021, the company has reportedly sent similar threat notifications to users in over 150 countries.

Before 2021, both Apple and Google had issued warnings to users globally, including in India, cautioning them of potential compromises due to attacks made by Pegasus, a spyware developed by the Israeli company NSO.
