Apple has officially announced its next-generation iPad mini, marking one of the most substantial architectural and hardware shifts the compact tablet line has seen to date. Headlining the update is a long-awaited transition to an OLED panel, the debut of the 2-nanometer A20 Pro chip, official ingress protection against water and dust, and custom-designed wireless and cellular networking silicon.
Despite retaining roughly the same physical footprint as its predecessor, the new iPad mini expands its display to 8.5 inches by trimming the surrounding bezels by 24 percent. The Super Retina XDR OLED panel delivers pixel-level illumination, supporting an expansive 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, deep blacks, and the full P3 wide color gamut. Peak brightness now reaches up to 1,200 nits—more than double the previous model—while full-screen brightness sits at 600 nits across both SDR and HDR content.
For dark environments, Apple implemented a 1-nit minimum brightness floor tailored for nighttime reading and specialized field operations such as cockpit electronic flight bags. In a notable first for the compact line, Apple is also bringing its nano-texture glass option down from the iPad Pro, cutting down surface glare for outdoor editing and technical tasks.
The chassis has been thinned to 5.4 mm and arrives in two finishes, Midnight and Starlight. Despite the sleeker profile, Apple has sealed the enclosure to achieve an official IP67 rating, adding resistance against rain, spills, and dust. Part of this structural redesign includes an overhauled audio system dubbed the Acoustic Display. Custom tweeters are positioned between the glass and aluminum frame, while newly engineered woofers push sound directly through the display assembly itself, reinforcing low-end bass response while keeping the physical chassis completely watertight.
Internally, the tablet is powered by the A20 Pro chip, fabricated on Apple’s latest 2-nanometer process node. The silicon incorporates a 6-core CPU delivering up to 60 percent faster multithreaded performance alongside a 7-core GPU that integrates dedicated Neural Accelerators per core, hardware-accelerated mesh shading, and ray tracing. These upgrades yield up to a 2.7x lift in graphical workloads and double the unified memory bandwidth. AI tasks see up to a 4.5x jump, with the 512GB tier packing a Dual 16-core Neural Engine—totaling 32 cores—to accelerate demanding on-device machine learning models and local generative workflows.
Connectivity also shifts over to custom silicon. The tablet incorporates Apple's N1 networking chip, bringing native support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Meanwhile, cellular models feature the C2 modem, which boosts mobile data speeds by up to 50 percent while delivering improved power efficiency when switching across networks.
The camera hardware has been reoriented for contemporary tablet usage, shifting the 12MP Center Stage front camera to the landscape edge for more natural framing during video conferences. Around the back, the 12MP primary shooter gains an Adaptive True Tone flash to assist in low-light capture and document scanning, retaining 4K video recording at up to 60 fps.
On the software side, the tablet runs iPadOS 27, introducing Siri AI with on-screen awareness, contextual personal retrieval across local files, and generative photo editing tools like spatial reframing. Multitasking receives a major boost as well, with iPadOS 27.2 enabling full extended display support when tethered to an external monitor. For accessories, the tablet supports both Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro, alongside a redesigned two-panel TechWoven Smart Folio in navy blue and taupe.
Pre-orders for the new tablet open on Wednesday, October 28, with retail and online availability beginning Friday, November 6 across 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage tiers. The Wi-Fi model starts at ₹82,900, while education pricing brings the entry cost down to ₹76,900. Customers opting for the Wi-Fi + Cellular configuration can pick it up starting at ₹1,00,900. In terms of accessories, the new TechWoven Smart Folio retails for ₹8,500, while the Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) are available for ₹11,900 and ₹7,900 respectively, with additional student discounts available on both styluses.
